Treks and walks · Namthing Pokhri
A quiet walk round the lake
Walk the edge of Namthing Pokhri in the dry season, when the lake is low and grassy and the forest around it is full of birds. An easy, short stop on a Sittong or Latpanchar day.
In the dry months Namthing Pokhri shrinks. Parts of the bed become a grassy meadow, and the surrounding forest of the Shelpu hills is the main attraction. It is a calm place for a short walk, a flask of tea and some birdwatching.
Keep to the path round the edge and avoid trampling the wet margins, which are where salamanders shelter and lay eggs when the water returns.
Combine it with Sittong's orchards in winter or Latpanchar's hornbills in spring.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Is Namthing Pokhri worth visiting outside the monsoon?
As a short stop, yes. The lake is smaller and quieter, the forest is pleasant and there are birds. Do not expect salamanders, which hide on land outside the breeding season. Combine it with Sittong or Latpanchar rather than making a special trip.
How big is Namthing Pokhri?
It is a small, shallow seasonal lake, not a large body of water. In the monsoon it fills; in winter it partly dries to a grassy hollow. A walk round the edge takes well under an hour.
Are there facilities at Namthing Pokhri?
Very few. Expect no shops, cafés or toilets. Bring water and snacks from Sittong or Latpanchar and take all rubbish away with you.
