A warm soak at the Yumthang hot spring
A small natural hot spring near the Lachung Chu on the valley floor, long used by local people as a healing bath. It is simple: a pool or a shed, warm sulphurous water and cold air. Bring a towel and a change of clothes if you plan to soak.

Hot springs, called tsa-chu in Sikkimese, are valued all over the Sikkim Himalaya, and families from Lachung and beyond have long visited the Yumthang spring in the cold months to bathe. The water smells of sulphur and comes out warm, not boiling. Local belief holds that it helps aching joints and skin complaints; we pass that on as tradition, not medical advice.
Facilities change from season to season. Sometimes there is a covered bathing shed, sometimes an open pool, sometimes only the outflow channel where people warm their hands. Your driver will know the current state. Most tour groups give it 20–30 minutes on the way back from the upper valley.
If you want to bathe properly, wear a swimsuit or shorts and T-shirt under your clothes, bring a towel, and change quickly; the air at 3,564 m is cold even on a sunny day. Do not use soap or shampoo in the pool. Keep children close, as the stones are slippery. People with heart conditions should avoid long soaks at altitude.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Is the Yumthang hot spring open to tourists?
Yes, the hot spring is free and open to visitors, though facilities vary by season. Sometimes there is a bathing shed, sometimes only an open pool. Ask your driver to stop on the way back from the upper valley. Bring a towel and change of clothes if you plan to bathe.
Is it safe to bathe in the Yumthang hot spring?
For healthy adults, a short soak is fine. Keep it under 15–20 minutes because hot water plus altitude can make you dizzy. People with heart conditions, high blood pressure or pregnancy should avoid it. Do not use soap, and dry and dress quickly afterwards in the cold air.
Are there separate bathing areas for men and women?
It depends on the facility in that season, and we cannot promise one. Bathe in a swimsuit or shorts and a T-shirt, and ask your driver or the local caretakers about current arrangements before you change.
