The forest climb to Kaiyakatta

From Gairibas the trail climbs steeply through forest to the small hamlet of Kaiyakatta, then eases on to Kalipokhri. It is one of the hardest climbs of the trek, and one of the most beautiful in rhododendron season.

The climb starts right out of the Gairibas clearing, on the cobbled Land Rover track and shortcut paths. It gains height quickly through oak and rhododendron forest, with views opening back over Gairibas and toward Tumling as you rise. Take it at a slow, steady pace with short stops.

Kaiyakatta, about 2 km and 1–1.5 hours up, is a small hamlet with a tea shop where most trekkers stop for a hot drink and noodles. From here the gradient eases and the trail continues through higher forest to Kalipokhri, the black pond, another 1–1.5 hours.

In April the forest on this stretch is often the best rhododendron show of the trek, with deep reds and pinks. In autumn, look north as you climb; Kanchenjunga appears again over the trees. Step aside for Land Rovers, which share parts of the track.

Questions people ask

Good to know

How hard is the climb from Gairibas to Kalipokhri?

It is one of the toughest stretches: about 6 km with roughly 550 m of climbing, taking 3–4 hours. Most of the height is gained in the first part to Kaiyakatta. Fit trekkers manage it with stops; go slowly and drink water.

Is there food at Kaiyakatta?

Yes, usually a tea shop serving tea, noodles and eggs. It is a natural stop halfway up the climb. Do not rely on full meals there outside the main season; carry snacks.

Do Land Rovers use the Gairibas to Kalipokhri track?

Yes, the Sandakphu track runs this way. Land Rovers grind up slowly, but come down fast. Step off to the side when you hear one and let it pass. Use the footpath shortcuts where your guide suggests.
