Meet the old Land Rovers at the stand
Spend half an hour among the Series Land Rovers that have climbed the Singalila Ridge since the 1950s. Talk to drivers, look under a bonnet or two and understand why a town on the Nepal border still runs on British four-wheel drives older than most of their passengers.

Mornings at the head of the Sandakphu track are the town's busiest hour. Land Rovers line up in a rough queue, owners checking oil and tyre pressure, porters lashing gas cylinders and rice sacks to the roof racks. Most vehicles are Series I and II models, with flat bonnets, sliding side windows and aluminium bodies that do not rust in the wet ridge air.
The owners run them through an association that fixes the fares and the order of departures, so you take the vehicle whose turn it is rather than choosing by colour. Drivers often know the full history of their Land Rover, who bought it, which engine it now runs and how many times it has been rebuilt. Ask politely; most are happy to talk while they wait.
If you are walking, this is the place to arrange a ride back down from Sandakphu or a lift for your bags. If you are riding, settle the fare, the overnight charge and the return time with the association before you load up. Then climb in at the back, hold the rail and expect four hours of bouncing on the cobbled track.

Questions people ask
Good to know
How old are the Maneybhanjan Land Rovers?
Many are Series I and II Land Rovers built in the 1950s and 1960s, kept running with rebuilt engines and salvaged parts by local mechanics. Each owner maintains his own vehicle within the association's fleet of about forty. You will also see a few newer jeeps on the route, but the old Land Rovers still do most of the work.
How much does a Land Rover to Sandakphu cost?
Indicatively ₹6,500–9,000 for a vehicle to Sandakphu and back with one night's halt, shared by up to six passengers. A one-way drop costs less, and each extra night adds a waiting charge. Rates are fixed by the owners' association and change each season, so check current status before you travel.
Do you need a guide if you go by Land Rover?
Yes. The licensed guide rule applies to everyone entering Singalila National Park, including vehicle trips. The guide rides with you, usually in the front, and his daily fee is added to your costs. Arrange the guide and park entry at Maneybhanjan before the Land Rover leaves.
