Ride an old Land Rover up to Sandakphu
For those who cannot walk three days, a Maneybhanjan Land Rover makes the 31 km climb to Sandakphu in about four hours on a cobbled track of hairpins, border villages and forest. It is rough, slow and one of the great vehicle rides in India.

Book the vehicle at the Maneybhanjan stand through the owners' association, with your guide and park entry sorted. Up to six people share a Land Rover, so a full vehicle brings the cost per head close to walking with lodges. Pack light; bags go on the roof or in the back under a tarpaulin.
The track leaves Maneybhanjan in steep bends past Chitrey and Meghma, then runs along the ridge through Tumling, Gairibas and Kalipokhri, often on stone cobbles, with stretches that have been rebuilt in recent years. You will cross in and out of Nepal without a gate. Drivers stop for tea at Tumling or Gairibas and for photographs if you ask.
The last climb from Bikheybhanjang to the summit is the steepest: tight hairpins in low gear, engine roaring. Then you are on top, stiff and dusty, at 3,636 m. Agree in advance when the driver will take you back down, usually after the next morning's sunrise.
Cost: ₹6,500–9,000 a vehicle round trip with one night
Questions people ask
Good to know
How long does the Land Rover take to Sandakphu?
About 4 hours from Maneybhanjan, depending on the track, traffic and stops, and a little less coming down. Snow or rain can slow it. In heavy snow in January and February the track may close for days.
Is the Land Rover ride to Sandakphu safe?
The drivers know the track well and accidents are rare, but the road is rough, steep and narrow, and the ride is bumpy. It is not ideal for people with back problems or pregnant women. Ask the driver to slow down if you are uncomfortable.
Can I go to Sandakphu and back in one day by Land Rover?
It is possible, about 8 hours of driving with a short stop, but you would arrive at midday when cloud usually hides the peaks. We strongly suggest one night on the summit to see sunset and sunrise.
