Sunrise over Kanchenjunga from the Barsey ridge

Sleep at the Barsey hut and step out before dawn to watch first light reach Kanchenjunga and the peaks around it, across the deep valleys of West Sikkim. It is cold, quiet and the main reason to spend a night on the ridge.

Day visitors who walk up from Hilley at 9 am often find the mountains already behind cloud. The only reliable way to see the range from Barsey is to sleep in the clearing and be outside before the sun. In October and November the sky is usually clear at dawn; December is clear but bitterly cold; in March and April you trade some haze for flowers. The hut staff will tell you which way to face and roughly what time the light arrives, which shifts from about 5 am in spring to about 6 am in December.

What you see is the Kanchenjunga range stretched across the north, with the lower forested ridges of West Sikkim in the foreground and the Rangeet valleys still dark below. The first pink light touches the highest summits a few minutes before it reaches anything else, then the snow turns gold and white within half an hour. We stay out until the sun reaches the clearing and the hut kitchen starts serving tea, which arrives at the right moment.

Dress for well below freezing in winter and close to it in spring: down jacket, cap, gloves and dry socks. A head torch helps for the short walk out of the hut in the dark. Photographers should bring a spare battery kept warm in an inside pocket, since cold drains them fast. If the dawn is cloudy, do not give up at once; gaps often open for a few minutes between 6 and 7 am.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Can you see Kanchenjunga from Barsey?

Yes, on clear days the Kanchenjunga range is visible to the north across the valleys of West Sikkim. Views are most reliable at dawn from October to December and fairly good in March and April. From May to September cloud usually hides the mountains by early morning, so a sighting then is luck rather than something to plan around.

Is it worth staying overnight at Barsey?

If you care about the mountain view, yes. Day visitors usually arrive after cloud has built up, while overnight guests get the dawn. The trade-off is comfort: the trekkers' hut is basic and very cold. Families who prefer warmth can stay in Okhrey or Hilley homestays and walk up early, starting by 5.30 am with torches, though that is a tough start.

How cold is Barsey at sunrise?

Very cold for most of the year. Around 3,000 m, dawn temperatures are often near or below freezing from November to March and only a few degrees above it in April and October. Wind makes it feel colder. Bring a down jacket, gloves and a warm cap even if the afternoon walk up felt warm, and keep phone and camera batteries in an inside pocket.
