Ridge walk to Rabindra Smriti Van
An easy ridge walk past farm terraces to the small Rabindra Smriti Van park, named for the local belief that Tagore once stayed at Rinchenpong, with Kanchenjunga views along the way when the sky is clear. Go at dawn or late afternoon for the softest light.

Rabindranath Tagore's stays in these hills are well recorded elsewhere. He came to Kalimpong, where he stayed at Gouripur House, and visited Mungpoo several times between 1938 and 1940 as the guest of the writer Maitreyi Devi. Rinchenpong people say he stayed here too, and a small park, Rabindra Smriti Van, keeps his name. We have not found a record that places him at Rinchenpong, so we treat it as a cherished local claim. It is worth knowing, because it tells you how much these villages wanted a place in that story.
The walk itself is gentle and mostly on village paths and quiet road. You pass maize and ginger terraces, plots of large cardamom in the shade of alder trees, and farmhouses with marigolds and drying chillies on the porch. In winter look for orange trees heavy with fruit. Birds are easy to find at this height: bulbuls, minivets and flycatchers in the scrub. Stop wherever the view opens to the north; the Kanchenjunga range is clearest from mid-October to December.
Allow 1.5–2 hours at an easy pace, including stops. Ask your host for the current route, since paths shift with farm work and the occasional landslide. Carry water and a warm layer for dawn, when it can be close to freezing on a clear December morning. The walk joins well with the monastery and the poison lake, so with an early start you can cover all three before lunch and spend the afternoon on a farmhouse step.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Did Tagore really visit Rinchenpong?
Local people say so, and the park is named after him, but we have found no firm record of a visit. Tagore's recorded stays in the region are at Kalimpong and at Mungpoo, which he visited several times between 1938 and 1940. Treat the Rinchenpong story as a local claim and enjoy the walk for what it is.
Is the ridge walk suitable for children?
Yes. It is mostly on village paths and quiet road with gentle gradients, and 1.5–2 hours covers it at a child's pace. Watch for terrace edges and the occasional jeep on the road. In the monsoon months the paths turn slippery and leeches appear, so plan the walk for October to May.
When is Kanchenjunga visible from Rinchenpong?
The clearest skies come from mid-October to December, with a second good window in March and early April before haze builds. Dawn is the best time; by 9 or 10 am cloud often rises from the valleys. From June to September the mountain is usually hidden for days or weeks at a time.
