Shared tour jeep

Tour desks around MG Marg sell seats on shared jeeps for the Tsomgo and Baba Mandir day trip, folding the permit into the price. Hand over a photo ID and two passport photos the evening before. Jeeps leave around 7–8 am and are back by mid-afternoon. You keep to the group's timing, but it is the cheapest way up.

1.5–2 h each way₹3,500–5,000 a car; ₹5,500–7,500 with Nathu La

Reserved car

A reserved Sikkim-registered taxi, booked through a registered operator, lets you set your own pace and add Nathu La on its open days. The operator arranges the permits with your documents a day ahead. Split between four or five people, it costs little more than shared seats. Agree what is included, such as Baba Mandir or the Tsomgo ropeway, before paying.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Do we need a permit for Tsomgo Lake?

Yes. Indian citizens need a permit, arranged through a registered Gangtok operator with a photo ID and passport photos, normally a day ahead; it is included in shared tour seats and car bookings. Foreign nationals can usually visit Tsomgo on a Protected Area Permit through a registered agent, in groups of two or more. Check current status before you travel.

How much does a Tsomgo Lake trip cost from Gangtok?

A shared seat for Tsomgo and Baba Mandir costs about ₹800–1,200 per person in 2025–26, including the permit. A reserved car costs about ₹3,500–5,000, or ₹5,500–7,500 if you add Nathu La. Boot hire, the ropeway and food at the lake are extra. Prices rise in October and May.

Is the Tsomgo road open in winter?

Usually, though heavy snow from December to March can close the road above Kyongnosla for a day or more until it is cleared. On many winter days the lake is frozen and the road is open only as far as Tsomgo. Keep a spare day in your plan and check current status before you travel.

How long should we spend at Tsomgo Lake?

About an hour at the lake is right for most people. At 3,753 m, walking is slow and the wind is cold, and staying too long can bring on headaches. Walk part of the shore, take tea at a stall and move on. Most day trips also stop at Baba Mandir, about 30–45 minutes further.
