Reserved car

A reserved car from the Motor Stand or your hotel is the easy option with luggage or a family. Ask for a half-day package that adds Damsang fort, Sangchen Dorjee monastery and Cross Hill for around ₹2,500–3,500. Drivers know the road well; agree the price and stops before you set off.

On foot (part)

Walkers can take a shared jeep to Algarah and walk some of the old trade path on village trails towards Pedong, with a local guide. It is a half-day ramble through cardamom, maize and broom grass, and gives a real sense of the mule route. Avoid it in the monsoon, when paths are slippery and leeches are out.

On the way

  • Algarah bazaar for tea and a look at the ridge
  • Viewpoints over the Rishi and Teesta valleys towards Sikkim
  • Sangchen Dorjee monastery just before Pedong

Local tip: Leave Kalimpong by 9 am so you have time for Damsang fort and the monastery before the afternoon cloud and the last jeep back.
