Dekeling Hotel
A Tibetan family-run hotel on Gandhi Road, a four- or five-minute walk below Chowrasta. About 28 rooms over several floors, wood-panelled and warm, with the owners usually on site. Long a favourite of budget travellers who want a central bed without a chain-hotel bill.

Dekeling sits on Gandhi Road at Clubside, opposite the car park, so you can step out of a shared jeep from Siliguri and be at the reception in minutes. The hotel is owned by the Dekeva family, Tibetan Darjeeling people, and that shows in the details: carpets, painted woodwork, butter tea if you ask, and a family that treats the place as home rather than a franchise. It is classed as a budget hotel with two-star comforts.
Rooms vary a lot by floor and outlook. The upper rooms are quieter and some catch a slice of the mountains; lower rooms face the road. Winter nights drop close to freezing, so ask about heaters and hot water when you book. Being central, you can walk to the Mall, Glenary's, the toy train station and the Chowk Bazaar jeep stands without paying for a taxi, which is real money saved over a three-night stay.
Why we suggest it
- Four or five minutes on foot from Chowrasta and the Mall
- Run by the same Tibetan family for decades, owners usually present
- Close to the Clubside jeep stops, so no taxi on arrival

Questions people ask
Good to know
How far is Dekeling Hotel from the Mall and Chowrasta?
About four to five minutes on foot, uphill. The hotel is on Gandhi Road at Clubside, opposite the car park, so it is also one of the easier central hotels to reach with luggage. Most shared jeeps from Siliguri stop within a short walk, and the railway station is about ten minutes downhill along Hill Cart Road.
Is Dekeling a good choice in winter?
Yes, if you ask for a room with a heater and confirm hot-water hours when you book. Darjeeling nights in December and January fall to about 2 °C, and old hill buildings hold the cold. Upper-floor rooms are usually warmer and quieter. Pack a warm layer for evenings inside, as most hill hotels have no central heating.
Can families stay at Dekeling Hotel?
Yes. The hotel has rooms of different sizes, and its central position suits families who do not want long walks uphill at the end of the day. Ask for a larger room or two connecting rooms early in peak periods such as May, June, October and the Durga Puja and Diwali holidays, when central Darjeeling fills up fast.
