Darjeeling Tourist Lodge (Meghbalika)
The state-run tourist lodge on Bhanu Sarani, five or six minutes from Chowrasta, now renamed Meghbalika. A main building with about 15 rooms plus economy rooms in an annexe, a garden, a terrace and a restaurant. Plain, central and dependable.

For decades the Darjeeling Tourist Lodge was the default address for Bengali families on a hill holiday, and it still works the same way: a solid government building on the steep stretch of Bhanu Sarani, a short climb from Chowrasta, with simple rooms and a dining hall. It has been renamed Meghbalika, but most taxi drivers still know it by the old name. Its address puts you above the worst of the market traffic yet close enough to walk to the Mall, Glenary's and the Chowrasta benches for sunrise.
Expect government-lodge comfort rather than boutique touches: clean linen, basic furniture, a heater on request in winter, and staff who have seen every kind of traveller. The garden and terrace are pleasant on a clear morning. Book well ahead for October, the Puja holidays and May–June. Tariffs, booking channels and the lodge's management have changed over the years, so check current status before you travel. Being a state property, it is also one of the few places in central Darjeeling where the price in peak week is close to the price in the off season.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Is the Darjeeling Tourist Lodge the same as Meghbalika?
Yes. The state-run Darjeeling Tourist Lodge on Bhanu Sarani has been renamed Meghbalika Tourism Property. Many drivers and older guidebooks still use the old name. It keeps its main building of about 15 rooms and economy rooms in an annexe. Check current booking channels and tariffs before you travel, as these have changed over time.
How steep is the walk to the Tourist Lodge?
Short but steep. The lodge sits on a sloping part of Bhanu Sarani, five or six minutes from Chowrasta. Most people manage it easily, but older travellers and anyone with heavy bags may prefer a taxi to the nearest drop point. In return you are above much of the traffic noise of the lower town.
Does the lodge serve meals?
Yes, there is a restaurant on site, which is useful on cold or rainy evenings when you do not want to walk back up from the Mall. Food is simple Indian and Chinese-style hill fare. For momos, thukpa and cheaper meals, the lanes around Chowk Bazaar and Laden La Road are a ten-minute walk downhill.
