Buxa is the Dooars' best short trek: a 5 km stone path through forest to a fort that guarded a Bhutanese pass, held Indian revolutionaries in the 1930s and sheltered Tibetan monks after 1959. This plan reaches it cheaply by train to Alipurduar and shared car to Santalabari, then gives you two nights on the ridge so you have time for Lepchakha's sunrise.

From Buxa you walk down and move to Jayanti, a forest village on a vast dry riverbed under the Bhutan hills. Spend the evening on the stones, walk with a guide towards Pokhri lake or simply watch birds next morning, then take the train home from Alipurduar.

  • The fort ruins and the memorial to 1930s detainees

Day01

Train to Alipurduar, walk up to Buxa

Buxa≈ 170 km by train to Alipurduar, then ≈ 30 km by car and 5 km on footDinner

Take an early train from NJP to Alipurduar Junction or New Alipurduar; check the current timetable, as a dawn departure makes the day work. From Alipurduar, share a car to Santalabari via Rajabhatkhawa, pay forest fees at the gate and start walking by noon. The stone path climbs steadily through forest for about 5 km; most people take two to three hours. Arrive at Buxa village by mid-afternoon, check into a homestay and watch evening light over the plains.

Day02

Lepchakha sunrise and the fort

BuxaBreakfast, dinner

Leave before dawn with a torch and a local guide for the steeper path to Lepchakha, about an hour and a half above Buxa, to see the sun rise over the Dooars plains and their rivers. Have tea in the village and walk back down for breakfast. Spend the late morning at the fort ruins and the memorial to the revolutionaries detained here from 1930 to 1937; read the plaque recalling Tagore's poem for them. Rest in the afternoon, then sit with your hosts in the evening and ask about the Tibetan years.

Spend today: ₹300 guide share + ₹150 lunch + ₹50 tea

Day03

Down to Santalabari, on to Jayanti

Jayanti5 km on foot, then ≈ 30 km by carBreakfast, dinner

Walk down to Santalabari after breakfast, about an hour and a half. Share a car to Jayanti via Rajabhatkhawa, stopping at the nature interpretation centre if it is open and hearing the story of the king who ate rice. Check into a homestay by the river. In the late afternoon walk out onto the Jayanti riverbed, which in the dry season is a plain of pale stones several hundred metres wide, and watch the Bhutan hills change colour. Leave the bed before dusk, when elephants may cross.

Spend today: ₹400 car share + ₹150 lunch

Day04

Riverbank birds and the train home

≈ 30 km by car, then ≈ 170 km by trainBreakfast

Walk the riverbank at first light for lapwings, wagtails, kingfishers and, in winter, water redstarts, or go with a local guide part of the way towards Pokhri lake if time allows. After breakfast, take a shared car or local bus to Alipurduar and an afternoon train back to NJP. If your train is late, Alipurduar has simple eateries near the station. You arrive in NJP by evening.

Spend today: ₹200 car share + ₹300 train + ₹150 lunch

Included

  • Unreserved or sleeper train fares NJP–Alipurduar return
  • Shared car seats Alipurduar–Santalabari, Santalabari–Jayanti and Jayanti–Alipurduar
  • Three nights in homestays at Buxa and Jayanti with dinner and breakfast

  • Porter for your bag on the Buxa path
  • Travel to NJP
  • Tips and personal expenses

Three ways to spend less

  • Travel in a group of three or four so shared cars and guides cost far less per person.
  • Take the train to Alipurduar rather than a car from NJP; it saves around ₹5,000 per car.
  • Carry snacks from Alipurduar; tea-shop food at Buxa is fine but limited and slightly dearer.

Good to know

  • Buxa's tourism zones close in the monsoon; check current status before you travel.
  • Leeches are common on the path from May to October; wear long socks.
  • Carry ID; it is checked at the Santalabari and Rajabhatkhawa gates.
  • Homestays are basic, with limited hot water and patchy power.

Questions people ask

Questions about this trip

Is the Buxa Fort walk suitable for beginners?

Yes. It is about 5 km on a stone path with a steady climb to around 850 m, two to three hours up for most people. No trekking experience is needed, just good shoes, water and a light pack. Lepchakha above is steeper but short.

Do we need to book Buxa homestays in advance?

On winter weekends and holidays, yes, because there are only a few. On weekdays you can often find a room on arrival, but booking ahead by phone through a contact or your Alipurduar driver saves worry. Rates are about ₹1,200–1,800 per person with meals.

Can we carry big luggage up to Buxa?

It is better not to. Leave large bags in a Rajabhatkhawa lodge or with your car, and walk up with a daypack. Porters at Santalabari carry bags for about ₹500–800. The path is narrow and long in places.

Which trains run from NJP to Alipurduar?

Several express and local trains connect NJP and Siliguri Junction with Alipurduar Junction or New Alipurduar, some via the Dooars line through Malbazar and Hasimara. Journey times are about four to six hours. Check the current timetable and book reserved seats on longer services.

Is there a safari on this trip?

Not in the base price, to keep costs low. If you want one, book a Buxa Tiger Reserve jeep safari from Jayanti or Rajabhatkhawa; a six-seat jeep with fees costs about ₹2,500–3,500. Elephants, gaur and birds are the usual sightings.

What is the history of Buxa Fort?

Buxa was a Bhutanese frontier fort taken by the British in the Duar War of 1864–65. It became a detention camp for revolutionaries from 1930 to 1937 and a jail in the 1940s, then sheltered Tibetan monks from 1959 until about 1971, when they moved to Karnataka.

Is it safe to walk in Buxa Tiger Reserve?

On the main path to Buxa and Lepchakha, in daylight and with a guide for the less-used sections, yes. Elephants and other animals live in the reserve, so do not walk at dusk or night, keep to marked paths and follow forest rules.

Can we see the Mahakal cave on this trip?

Not comfortably in three nights; the Mahakal walk from Jayanti is a long day, about 5–6 km each way. Add a second night at Jayanti if you want it, and go with a local guide after checking current forest rules.

What is the best season for this trip?

October to April. November to February give the clearest views from Lepchakha and dry paths. March and April are warmer and hazier. The monsoon brings leeches, slippery paths and closed zones, so avoid June to September.
