Goecha La is a pass on the south side of Kanchenjunga inside Khangchendzonga National Park, India's first mixed natural and cultural World Heritage Site, inscribed by UNESCO in 2016. The trail starts at Yuksom, where Sikkim's first Chogyal was consecrated in 1642, and climbs through forest and pasture that Sikkimese Buddhists consider sacred. Near the top lies Samiti Lake, and above it the moraine leads to the viewpoints facing the mountain's east face.

This is a serious trek. You gain about 2,800 m from Yuksom and sleep above 3,800 m for several nights. A licensed guide and park permit are mandatory, and in recent seasons most groups have been allowed only as far as View Point 1. We price it with a registered Yuksom agency providing guide, cook, porters or yaks, tents and food, sharing the trail huts where available. Rules change: check current status before you travel.

TshokaBreakfast, packed lunch, dinner

The longest day on the way up: about 16 km and 7 to 8 hours from 1,780 m to about 3,000 m. The trail follows the Prek Chu valley through forest, crossing suspension bridges, and passes the clearing at Sachen and the bridge at Bakhim. The final climb to Tshoka is steep. Tshoka has a trekkers' hut and a small Tibetan settlement with a monastery and a pond. Rest your legs and drink plenty of water.

Day03

Tshoka to Dzongri

DzongriBreakfast, lunch, dinner

Climb through rhododendron forest on wooden walkways to Phedang, then out of the trees to the open slopes of Dzongri at about 4,000 m. About 4 to 6 hours and roughly 1,000 m of height gain. You may feel the altitude: walk slowly, keep drinking water and tell your guide about headaches or nausea. Dzongri has a trekkers' hut and yak pasture, and the cold arrives quickly after sunset.

Day04

Dzongri Top and rest day

DzongriBreakfast, lunch, dinner

Wake around 4 am and climb about 45 minutes to Dzongri Top for sunrise over the Kanchenjunga range, Kabru, Pandim and their neighbours. Return for breakfast and rest: this day is for acclimatisation, not for pushing on. A short walk in the afternoon to the higher ground around the camp helps your body adjust. Watch for signs of altitude sickness in yourself and others.

Day05

Dzongri to Thansing

ThansingBreakfast, lunch, dinner

Cross the high ground beyond Dzongri and descend through rhododendron to Kokchurang on the Prek Chu, then follow the river up to the open meadow at Thansing, about 3,900 m. About 5 to 6 hours. Pandim rises directly above the valley. Thansing is a wide, cold campsite; layer up as soon as you stop walking.

A short, slow walk of 2 to 3 hours up the valley to Lamuney, about 4,150 m, the last camp before the viewpoints. Pack warm layers, headtorch, water and snacks the night before.

Day07

View Point 1 and back to Thansing

ThansingBreakfast, lunch, dinner

Leave around 2 or 3 am, pass Samiti Lake and climb the moraine to View Point 1 at about 4,600 m in time for sunrise on Kanchenjunga's east face. Where rules and conditions allow, some groups continue towards View Point 2; most do not, and in recent seasons access beyond View Point 1 has been restricted. Descend to Lamuney for breakfast and walk on down to Thansing. A long, cold, rewarding day of 9 to 11 hours.

Day08

Thansing to Tshoka

TshokaBreakfast, lunch, dinner

Walk down the Prek Chu valley to Kokchurang and take the forest trail that bypasses Dzongri, through rhododendron and fir to Phedang and on to Tshoka. About 6 to 7 hours, mostly downhill, which is hard on knees: use trekking poles. Tshoka feels warm after the high camps. Celebrate with hot food and a long sleep.

The final descent of about 16 km and 6 to 7 hours back through Bakhim and Sachen to Yuksom. Check out at the park office and police checkpost with your guide. Day10

Yuksom to NJP

≈ 150 km · 7 h by shared jeep via JorethangBreakfast

Take the first shared jeep out of Yuksom towards Jorethang and change for Siliguri. Your legs will thank you for the sitting. Book an evening train or flight, or the next morning's, to allow for delays. If the weather held you on the mountain, this buffer day is the one you will be glad you kept.

Spend today: ₹600–700 jeep seats + ₹150 lunch

Included

  • Shared jeep seats NJP–Yuksom and back
  • Two nights in a Yuksom guesthouse
  • Licensed guide, cook, porters or yaks, tents and all meals on the trail

  • Personal porter for your own bag
  • Tips for trek staff
  • Travel insurance and evacuation
  • Foreign nationals' Restricted Area Permit costs

Three ways to spend less

  • Book through a registered agency based in Yuksom rather than a city reseller; the same staff run the trek and the margin stays local.
  • Join a fixed-departure group of six to ten trekkers, which spreads the cost of guide, cook and pack animals.
  • Rent a sleeping bag and down jacket in Yuksom instead of buying new gear for one trek.

Good to know

  • A licensed guide and park permit are mandatory; foreign nationals also need a Restricted Area Permit and must trek through a registered agency in a group. Check current status before you travel.
  • Most groups are currently allowed only to View Point 1. Check current status before you travel.
  • Altitude sickness is a real risk above 3,500 m; descend if symptoms worsen.
  • Carry all plastic and packaging back down; the park checks and fines littering.
  • Best seasons are April–May (rhododendrons, some cloud) and October–November (clearer, colder).

Questions people ask

Questions about this trip

How difficult is the Goecha La trek?

It is moderate to difficult. Expect 6 to 8 hours of walking on most days, a long climb of about 1,200 m on the first day to Tshoka, and several nights above 3,800 m. Previous trekking experience helps. Train for at least six weeks with stair climbing, long walks and a loaded pack.

Can I reach Goecha La pass itself?

In recent seasons, most trekkers have been allowed only to View Point 1, at about 4,600 m, which gives a full view of Kanchenjunga's east face. Access to View Point 2 and the pass has been restricted. Rules change year to year, so check current status before you travel.

How much does the Goecha La trek cost?

With a registered Yuksom agency, expect about ₹3,000–4,000 per person per day on the trail for guide, cook, porters or yaks, tents and food in a group. Our 9-night price from NJP back to NJP is about ₹34,000 per person, indicative for 2025–26. Small groups pay more.

Do I need a permit for Goecha La?

Yes. Indian trekkers need a Khangchendzonga National Park permit, issued in Yuksom, and must register with the police and trek with a licensed guide. Foreign nationals also need a Sikkim Restricted Area Permit and must trek through a registered agency, usually in a group of two or more. Check current status before you travel.

When is the best season for Goecha La?

April to May and October to November. Spring brings rhododendrons in the lower forest and more afternoon cloud; autumn brings the clearest views and colder nights. Winter has deep snow above Dzongri, and the monsoon from June to September means rain, leeches and poor views.

Where do we sleep on the trail?

In tents and, where available, the government trekkers' huts at Tshoka and Dzongri. Huts are basic: wooden bunks, no heating. Higher camps at Thansing and Lamuney are tents only. Your agency carries the tents, sleeping mats and kitchen; bring your own sleeping bag rated to about minus 10 °C.

What about altitude sickness?

Take it seriously. Ascend slowly, drink 3 to 4 litres of water a day, use the rest day at Dzongri and tell your guide about headache, nausea, dizziness or breathlessness at rest. Persistent or worsening symptoms mean going down. Ask your doctor about acetazolamide before the trip.

Can I do a shorter version?

Yes. The Dzongri trek turns round at Dzongri after the dawn walk to Dzongri Top, and takes about 6 nights from NJP back to NJP. You still get a full Kanchenjunga range view at about 4,000 m with less time at high altitude. See our Dzongri trek journey.

Do I need to hire a personal porter?

Not necessarily. Pack animals or porters hired by the agency carry the group's tents, food and kitchen. Most trekkers carry their own day pack and either a main pack or pay extra to offload it. Offloading usually costs a few hundred rupees per day; ask your agency.
