The Goecha La trail out of Yuksom has a chain of basic trekkers' huts built by the Sikkim government, the best known at Tshoka and Dzongri. They are shelters, not lodges: dormitory rooms with wooden bunks, no heating and shared toilets that freeze on cold nights. Many organised groups sleep in tents beside the huts and use the hut only as a kitchen and dining space.

You do not usually book a hut yourself. Your registered trek agency or guide arranges the night along with your park permit, cook and porters or yaks. In April, May, October and November the huts can be crowded, which is one reason groups carry tents. Rules, fees and hut availability change: check current status before you travel.

Why we suggest it

  • The only fixed shelter at Tshoka and Dzongri on the Goecha La trail
  • Cuts the weight and cost of a trek compared with full camping
  • Dzongri hut is the base for the dawn walk to Dzongri Top

We list rates as indicative ranges. We do not take commission from this property for being listed here. Check current status before you travel.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Can I book the Dzongri trekkers' hut myself?

In practice, no. Trekking in Khangchendzonga National Park needs a licensed guide and a park permit issued at Yuksom, and the guide or agency arranges hut space at the same time. Independent walkers without a guide are not allowed beyond the checkpost. Check current status before you travel, because rules have changed in recent seasons.

What facilities do the Goecha La trekkers' huts have?

Very few. Expect bunk beds or a wooden floor, a kitchen room, a toilet block and no heating or running hot water. Bring a sleeping bag rated to about minus 10 °C, a headtorch and warm layers. Your cook usually brings food and fuel; carry your own water purification.

Are the trekkers' huts crowded?

They can be in peak months, April to May and October to November, when many groups start on the same days. That is why most agencies also carry tents. In early March or late November there are fewer groups, but nights are colder and snow is more likely above Dzongri.
