Dzongri trek from Yuksom

A shorter high trek from Yuksom into Khangchendzonga National Park, through rhododendron forest and the Tibetan settlement at Tshoka to the yak pastures of Dzongri. The reward is dawn on Dzongri Top with Kanchenjunga, Kabru and Pandim in front of you. From about ₹20,000 per person.

Not everyone has ten days for Goecha La. The Dzongri trek follows the same trail out of Yuksom for its first three days and turns round after the dawn climb to Dzongri Top, at a little over 4,000 m. From there the view takes in a wide arc of the Kanchenjunga range, with Kabru, Pandim and the peaks around them, and the prayer flags of the hilltop snapping in the wind.

We split the climb to Tshoka over two days, with a night at Sachen, which is easier on the legs and on acclimatisation than the usual one-day push. You still need a licensed guide, a park permit and some fitness, but the time spent above 3,500 m is short. Rules change: check current status before you travel.

Questions people ask

Questions about this trip

How hard is the Dzongri trek?

Moderate. The walking days are 4 to 7 hours, and with the night at Sachen the climbs are steady rather than brutal. The challenge is altitude at Dzongri, about 4,000 m. A reasonably fit beginner who trains for a month and walks slowly can do it.

What is the difference between Dzongri and Goecha La?

Dzongri turns round after the dawn view from Dzongri Top, about 4 days on the trail. Goecha La continues to Thansing, Lamuney and View Point 1 at about 4,600 m, for a close view of Kanchenjunga's east face, adding 3 to 4 days and more time at high altitude.

How much does the Dzongri trek cost?

About ₹20,000 per person from NJP back to NJP, indicative for 2025–26, with a registered Yuksom agency in a small group. That covers jeeps, two nights in Yuksom, guide, cook, porters, food and permits. Smaller groups or private departures cost more.

When is the best time for Dzongri?

October and November for the clearest views, and April and May for rhododendrons along the forest trail. March and December are possible but cold, with snow likely at Dzongri. Avoid June to September, when rain, leeches and cloud make the trek miserable.

Can I trek to Dzongri without a guide?

No. A licensed guide is mandatory in Khangchendzonga National Park, and you must register at Yuksom before starting. Foreign nationals must also trek through a registered agency. Check current status before you travel, as rules have tightened in recent years.

Is Dzongri Top worth the early start?

Yes. The view of the Kanchenjunga range at sunrise is the reason to make the trek. The climb is only about 45 minutes from the Dzongri huts, though it is cold and dark. Wear every layer you have and take a flask of tea.

Where do we sleep on the Dzongri trek?

In Yuksom on the first and last nights, then at Sachen, Tshoka and Dzongri in tents or trekkers' huts. The government huts at Tshoka and Dzongri are basic shelters with bunks and no heating. Your agency arranges space and carries tents in case huts are full.

Can children do the Dzongri trek?

Older children who already trek, roughly 12 and up, often manage it with a slow pace and the Sachen night. Younger children are more at risk from cold and altitude. Discuss your plans with the agency and a doctor before booking.

What should I pack for Dzongri?

A down jacket, fleece, thermals, waterproof jacket, woollen cap, gloves, broken-in trekking boots, a headtorch, two water bottles, sunscreen, sunglasses, a basic first-aid kit and a sleeping bag rated to about minus 10 °C. Keep your day pack light.
