Is three nights enough for Lava and Lolegaon?
Yes, for the main things: a monastery visit and Neora Valley in Lava, Changey Falls near Kolakham, the canopy walk and a Jhandi Dara sunrise in Lolegaon. With a reserved car there is little waiting. Add a night if you want Rishyap, about 10 km by road from Lava at 2,591 m, or a slower second day in Lolegaon.
How much does this long weekend cost?
About ₹12,500 per person, twin sharing, from NJP or Bagdogra back again, indicative for 2025–26. Half of a reserved small car for four days is the largest share at about ₹5,500; the WBFDC lodges with dinner and breakfast come to a similar amount. Four people in one car bring the per-person price down by about ₹2,500.
How far is Lava from NJP and how long does it take?
Allow 4–5 hours by reserved car, depending on the road in use. The usual route follows NH10 up the Teesta, climbs to Kalimpong and runs 30–34 km on via Algarah. NH10 has had repeated closures since October 2023, and drivers then use the Gorubathan–Lava road, Gajoldoba and Odlabari, or Darjeeling and Peshok. Check current status before you travel.
Is this trip suitable for children and older parents?
Yes, with care. The car stays with you, walks are short, and the canopy walk and Changey Falls each involve under 1 km on foot; wear shoes with grip, as forest paths stay damp. Lava at about 2,195 m is cold at night, so pack warm layers. The Jhandi Dara sunrise can be done by car, and Neora Valley can be skipped by anyone who tires easily.
Do I need a permit for Neora Valley?
Yes. Get a forest permit and a local guide at the Lava range office, and pay a vehicle fee. Expect roughly ₹150–300 entry per person and ₹600–1,000 a day for a guide. The park closes in the monsoon, roughly mid-June to mid-September, and fees and rules change, so check current status before you travel.
Where do we stay on this trip?
We use the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation's lodges: the WBFDC Lava Eco Tourism Centre, with cottages and tents in a forest compound, and the WBFDC Lolegaon Eco Tourism Centre. Both cost roughly ₹2,000–3,000 a room, and meals are ordered from the canteen. Village homestays in both places charge about ₹1,300–2,200 per person with dinner and breakfast.
What is Kolakham known for?
Kolakham is a village at about 1,981 m, 8 km from Lava, on the edge of Neora Valley National Park, with a view of Kanchenjunga on clear days. Local accounts say it was founded by Ujir Man Rai Samsuhang, which is why it is also called Rai Gaon. Changey Falls lies about 4 km away, a 900 m walk from the road.
When is the best time for Lava and Lolegaon?
October and November bring the clearest mountain views and dry roads. March to May is mild, with spring flowers in the forest and fair mornings. December to February is cold and often clear, and Lava sometimes sees snow. June to September is wet, Neora Valley is closed and landslides slow every road, so we do not plan this trip then.
Can we do this trip by shared jeep instead?
Partly. Shared jeeps run Siliguri to Kalimpong for ₹200–300 and Kalimpong to Lava for ₹120–180, though Lava jeeps are few and mostly leave in the morning. Beyond Lava you will need a car for Lolegaon, about ₹1,800–2,500. Expect an extra night in Kalimpong on the way up and more waiting; the saving is real but costs time.
