Is Morgan House in Kalimpong haunted?
The ghost stories are folklore. Morgan House was built in the 1930s by the jute baron George Morgan, and over the decades staff, drivers and guests have passed ghost stories about it from one to the next. They are local storytelling, not history, and nothing on record supports them. We enjoy them as part of the house's character, and you are free to sleep with the lights on.
How do we book Morgan House?
Morgan House is run by WBTDC, West Bengal's state tourism corporation, so book through the corporation's official booking channels rather than through unknown agents. Rooms cost roughly ₹3,500–6,500 a night, indicative for 2025–26, depending on the room and season. October, November and the Dashain and Tihar holidays fill early, so book a few weeks ahead for those months.
How far is Morgan House from Kalimpong town?
About 3 km, on Durpin hill at around 1,372 m. By car it is 10–15 minutes to the centre, depending on traffic. Zang Dhok Palri Phodang and the army golf course are close by, so you can walk to the monastery. For the market and Thongsa Gompa you will want a car or a taxi, as the road back up is steep.
Where did Rabindranath Tagore stay in Kalimpong?
Tagore stayed at Gauripur House in Kalimpong between 1938 and 1940. In 1938 his poem Janmadin was broadcast from Kalimpong on his birthday. Another Kalimpong house linked to the family is Chitrabhanu, the home of his daughter-in-law Pratima Devi. Ask your driver to point out both; check locally how much of each is open to visitors.
What is Kalimpong cheese?
Kalimpong cheese is a gouda-style cheese first made here by the Swiss Welfare Dairy, set up by Father André Butty, a Swiss Jesuit who was refused entry to Tibet in the 1950s and stayed on. The dairy also made Kalimpong lollipops, hand-rolled milk sweets. It closed in 1990, but others still make both on a small scale; ask in the market.
What did David Macdonald have to do with Kalimpong?
David Macdonald was interpreter on Younghusband's 1904 expedition to Tibet and later a British trade agent. After retiring in 1924 he turned his Kalimpong home into the Himalayan Hotel, where Everest climbers and Tibet travellers stayed. It is now a luxury spa resort under Mayfair, so we mention it for its history rather than as a stay.
How much does this heritage trip cost?
About ₹19,500 per person, twin sharing, from NJP or Bagdogra back again, indicative for 2025–26. That covers half a reserved car each way, three nights at Morgan House, meals, a full day and a half day of local car sightseeing, and small entry fees and donations. Paragliding at Deolo, at ₹2,500–4,500, is extra. Solo travellers pay more, as the room and car are not shared.
Is NH10 open for the drive to Kalimpong?
NH10, from Sevoke up the Teesta to Teesta Bazar, has had repeated landslide and flood closures since the October 2023 Teesta flood. On those days drivers take Gajoldoba and Odlabari, the Gorubathan–Lava road (NH717A) or the long way via Darjeeling and Peshok, which adds time. Your driver will know the day's road, but check current status before you travel.
When is the best time for a Kalimpong heritage trip?
March to May and October to December are best: dry roads, mild days around Kalimpong's 1,247 m and clear evenings on Durpin. January and February are cold but quiet, with lower room rates. July and August bring heavy rain and landslide risk on NH10. Losar in February or March and Dashain and Tihar in October and November add festival life but fill rooms.
