Morgan House is the reason many people choose Kalimpong over Darjeeling. The house was built in the 1930s for George Morgan, an English jute baron, and passed to the state after Independence. West Bengal Tourism (WBTDC) runs it as a lodge, so you get a colonial country house with wooden floors, fireplaces and a long lawn for a fraction of what a private heritage hotel would charge. It sits on Durpin hill at about 1,370 m, close to the army golf course and the Zang Dhok Palri monastery, roughly 3 km from the Motor Stand.

Rooms vary a great deal, from small doubles to large deluxe rooms and cottages, so ask which one you are getting. Food is simple and government-canteen in style. The house has a long-running ghost story about Lady Morgan walking the corridors; that is local folklore, told cheerfully by staff and taxi drivers alike. Book on the WBTDC website, and check current status before you travel, since rates and room types change.

Questions people ask

Good to know

How do I book Morgan House in Kalimpong?

Morgan House is run by West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation, so you book it through the WBTDC online booking site or their Kolkata and Siliguri offices. Rooms on weekends, in October and around the Durga Puja holidays sell out weeks ahead. Pay in full at booking, keep the voucher on your phone and carry an ID. Rates and room types change: check current status before you travel.

Is Morgan House really haunted?

The ghost of Lady Morgan is a local story, not a recorded fact. Staff and drivers tell it with a smile, and it has made the house famous on Bengali travel shows. What you will actually notice is a quiet old stone house with long corridors and creaking floors. If ghost tales spoil your sleep, ask for a room in the newer cottage block.

How far is Morgan House from Kalimpong town?

It is about 3 km from the Motor Stand on Durpin hill, a 10–15 minute taxi ride for roughly ₹200–300. Walking down to town takes about 45 minutes and is pleasant in daylight, but the walk back up is steep. Zang Dhok Palri monastery and the golf course are within 15 minutes on foot, so many guests skip the town on their first evening.
