North Sikkim at a safe pace, by private car

The full North Sikkim circuit, done the way we would want our parents to do it: a private car, a gentle first night at Singhik, two nights in Lachen to acclimatise before Gurudongmar, and two in Lachung for Yumthang and Zero Point. About ₹37,500 per person for two sharing, from Gangtok. Check current status before you travel.

The standard 3-day tour packs Gurudongmar and Yumthang into one breathless rush, and many people come home with headaches and little else. This trip costs more because it moves slower. A private car means you stop where you want. A first night at Singhik, at about 1,560 m, splits the long drive. Two nights in Lachen give your body a day to adjust before the climb to about 5,180 m.

Then two nights in Lachung let you see the village as well as Yumthang and Zero Point. Rooms are better than on shared tours, with heating where available. The price assumes two people sharing the car and a room; a family of four in one vehicle pays noticeably less per person. Since 2023, closures on the Lachen road in particular are common. Check current status before you travel.

Questions people ask

Questions about this trip

Why spend two nights in Lachen?

Because Gurudongmar is roughly 2,400 m higher than Lachen. With one night, your body has almost no time to adjust, and headaches and sickness are common. A spare day spent at Thangu and Chopta, then sleeping back in Lachen, reduces the risk and makes the lake visit far more pleasant.

How much does a private car for North Sikkim cost?

For 6 days from Gangtok with driver, fuel and permits, roughly ₹30,000–40,000 per vehicle in 2025–26, depending on the car and season. Split between two people that is about ₹15,000–20,000 each; between four, about half that. Zero Point is extra.

Is this trip suitable for older travellers?

It is designed to be gentler than the standard tour, with a low first night and an acclimatisation day. People over 60 should still consult a doctor about Gurudongmar and can skip the lake while the rest go. Yumthang and Chopta are good alternatives.

Can we do this trip with children?

Yes, with care. The slower pace helps. Children under five should not go to Gurudongmar or Zero Point; an adult can stay with them in Lachen or at Yumthang. Pack warm clothes, snacks and motion-sickness medicine, and keep the car well ventilated.

What kind of hotels are used?

Better small hotels and well-run homestays with heated rooms where available, attached bathrooms and reliable hot water. North Sikkim has no luxury properties; even the best rooms are simple by city standards. Ask for named hotels such as Yarlam Resort in Lachung for more comfort.

Can foreigners take this trip?

Not in this form. Foreign nationals cannot visit Gurudongmar, Zero Point and, under current rules, may not be allowed to Chopta or Thangu. A Comfort-tier Lachung and Yumthang trip with Singhik and Dzongu works instead. Check current status before you travel.

What if the Lachen road is closed?

Your agent should switch you to more nights in Lachung and the lower valleys, such as Singhik, Mangan and Dzongu. Agree in advance how the price changes if Gurudongmar is cancelled. Do not book this trip in the monsoon.

Which car is best for North Sikkim?

Local operators use Bolero, Scorpio, Xylo and Innova vehicles. For two or three people, any of them is fine; for families, an Innova is more comfortable. Ask for a newer vehicle and a driver who regularly runs the Lachen and Lachung routes.

Should we tip the driver?

It is customary. For a good driver on a 6-day trip, ₹300–500 a day is normal, given at the end. Drivers in North Sikkim work long hours on hard roads and often help with luggage, permits and finding rooms.
