Jatraprasad and Rhino Observation Point
The classic Gorumara slot: a short jeep ride to the Jatraprasad watchtower and the Rhino Observation Point, which look over a salt lick and grassland by the Murti. Rhinos, gaur, elephants and peafowl come to the lick, most often early and late.
The forest department runs fixed slots through the day, typically from about 6:30 am to 5 pm in four shifts, each roughly an hour and a half. You book a slot, report at the counter in Lataguri with ID, and board a forest-registered jeep with a guide. The drive into the forest is short; most of the time is on the tower. Timings and shifts change: check current status before you travel.
Jatraprasad is named after a forest department elephant. From its platform you look across a salt lick where animals come to take minerals from the soil, with grassland and the Murti beyond. Rhinos often appear in the last hour of light, gaur come out of the sal in small herds, and wild elephants pass at times. The Rhino Observation Point nearby gives a second angle on the same open ground.
Expect crowds on weekends; dozens of people can share the towers. Keep voices low and do not lean over the rails. A 200–300 mm lens or good binoculars make a big difference, as animals are often 100 m or more away.
Cost: ₹2,500–3,500 a jeep for up to 6 (indicative)
Questions people ask
Good to know
How do I book a Gorumara watchtower safari?
Through the West Bengal forest department's online booking system, or at the counter in Lataguri if seats remain. You choose the tower route and the shift, pay entry, guide and vehicle fees, and hire a registered jeep. ID is checked. Book weeks ahead for weekends, Puja holidays and December.
Are rhinos guaranteed at Jatraprasad?
No. Gorumara has about 60 rhinos, and sightings at the salt lick are frequent in winter but not certain. Gaur and peafowl are very likely, elephants occasional. Booking two different slots over two days, one at dawn and one at dusk, is the best way to improve your chances.
Which slot is best at Gorumara?
The first slot in the morning and the last in the afternoon are the most productive, when animals move to the salt licks and the light is soft. Midday slots are quieter and hotter. In December and January mornings are cold and misty, so carry a warm layer.
