Winter ducks at the Gajoldoba barrage
Gajoldoba, where the Teesta barrage holds back a wide sheet of water about 30 km from Siliguri, is the region's best easy site for winter waterbirds. Come at dawn from November to February for ducks, geese and waders by the thousand.

The Teesta Barrage at Gajoldoba was built to feed irrigation canals across north Bengal, and the slow water upstream has become a winter refuge for migratory birds. From November to February flocks of ruddy shelduck, bar-headed geese, common teal, northern pintail and other ducks rest here, with lapwings, plovers and storks along the edges. In recent years the state has promoted the area as a tourism hub, so expect some development on the banks.
Leave Siliguri by 6 am in winter; the light is soft until about 9 and the birds are most active. Local boatmen take visitors out on the reservoir in small country boats; agree the price and the time on the water before you step in, and ask them to keep a respectful distance from the flocks rather than chase them for photographs.
Bring binoculars, a warm layer for the river mist and a field guide or app. Fish lunches are served in small eateries near the barrage, often with boroli or local river fish. Combine the trip with the Coronation Bridge at Sevoke on the way back, or go on to Lataguri by the Odlabari road.
Cost: ₹1,500–2,000 car + ₹300–600 boat
Questions people ask
Good to know
When is the best time to see birds at Gajoldoba?
December and January are the peak, with large flocks of migratory ducks and geese; November and February are also good. Arrive by 6:30 or 7 am. From April the winter visitors leave and the barrage is mostly a picnic spot. In the monsoon the river is high and boating may stop.
How do I get to Gajoldoba from Siliguri?
It is about 30 km, 45 minutes to an hour by car via the Siliguri–Jalpaiguri side roads. A reserved car for the morning costs roughly ₹1,500–2,000. There is no convenient public transport at dawn, which is when you want to be there.
Is boating at Gajoldoba safe?
The country boats are small and the water is wide, so wear a life jacket if one is offered and ask for it if not. Avoid going out in wind or fog thick enough to hide the bank. Agree the fare first; prices are usually per boat for a fixed time.
