Momos, rolls and mishti on Hill Cart Road
Siliguri eats like its traders: Tibetan-style momos and thukpa, Bengali sweets, Kolkata-style egg rolls, Bihari litti and Marwari snacks, often on the same street. An evening walk around Hill Cart Road and Sevoke Road is a cheap tour of the whole region's kitchens.

Because everyone passes through Siliguri, its food is a meeting of the hills, the plains and the Northeast. Momo stalls serve steamed and fried dumplings with fiery tomato and chilli sauce; small restaurants run by families from Darjeeling and Sikkim add thukpa and thenthuk; Bengali sweet shops sell rosogolla, sandesh and mishti doi; roll counters fold egg and chicken into parathas Kolkata style.
Start with momos and a bowl of soup, try a kathi roll, then finish at a sweet shop with mishti doi and a hot jalebi. Street prices are low: ₹60–120 for a plate of momos, ₹50–100 for a roll, ₹20–40 for a sweet. Vegetarians do well too, with chhole, puri-sabzi and dosa counters near the markets.
Choose stalls with a quick turnover and hot, freshly steamed food. Drink bottled or filtered water. If you have an early train, eat near NJP, where small dhabas stay open late for passengers.
Cost: ₹200–500 per person
Questions people ask
Good to know
What food is Siliguri known for?
Momos and thukpa from the hills, Bengali sweets and fish curries, Kolkata-style rolls and the North Indian dhaba food of a highway town. In winter look for river fish such as boroli from the Teesta and Torsa, a north Bengal favourite cooked in mustard gravy.
Is street food in Siliguri safe for tourists?
Usually, with simple care. Eat at busy stalls where food is cooked in front of you and served hot, avoid cut fruit and chutneys that have sat in the heat, and drink bottled or filtered water. Carry oral rehydration salts on any India trip.
Where can vegetarians eat in Siliguri?
Easily. Pure-vegetarian restaurants run by Marwari and Gujarati families serve thalis, and there are South Indian dosa places and veg momo stalls across the centre. A veg thali costs about ₹120–250. Ask for less oil if you are heading into a long drive.
