Sunrise over Kanchenjunga from Deolo

The easiest sunrise around Kalimpong: a 20-minute taxi ride to the top of Deolo, 1,704 m, and the Kanchenjunga massif to the north-west turning from grey to pink to white above the hills of Sikkim.

Kalimpong does not have a Tiger Hill crowd, and Deolo is the reason it does not need one. From the top of the hill, at 1,704 m, the view opens north-west across the Teesta valley to the hills of Sikkim and, behind them, the Kanchenjunga massif. On a clear winter morning the top of the mountain catches the sun several minutes before anything else.

Book a taxi the night before for about 30 minutes before sunrise: roughly 5.30 am in October and March, nearer 6.15 am in December and January. A return trip with waiting costs about ₹500–800. Wear a warm jacket, a cap and gloves in winter, when it is often near freezing at dawn. If you are staying at the Deolo Tourist Lodge, simply walk out of the door.

Clear dawns are most likely from mid-October to early December and again in February and March. In the monsoon, from June to September, you will rarely see the peaks. If the mountain does not come out, wait 20 minutes; cloud often lifts briefly just after sunrise. Afterwards, walk down through Dr Graham's Homes for breakfast in town.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Is Deolo better than Durpin for sunrise?

Deolo is higher, at 1,704 m against Durpin's 1,372 m, and has a wider view north towards Kanchenjunga, so most people prefer it for sunrise. Durpin is better combined with morning prayers at Zang Dhok Palri. On a two-night stay, try one dawn at each.

Is Deolo park open at sunrise?

The viewpoint area is usually accessible at dawn, while the park facilities, ticket counter and stalls open later in the morning. Rules can change, especially for vehicles, so ask your hotel or driver the evening before and check current status before you travel.

When can you see Kanchenjunga from Kalimpong?

The clearest months are October to December and February to April. January is often clear but cold. From June to September monsoon cloud usually hides the peaks. Early morning is best; cloud builds through the day.
