Hike from Icchey Gaon to Damsang fort
Walk about 6 km through forest and farmland to the ruined stronghold of Gaeboo Achyok, the 17th-century Lepcha chief who fought the Bhutanese for these hills. A half-day hike with history at the end.

Damsang Gadi, the fort of the Lepcha chief Gaeboo Achyok, stands in ruins on a ridge about 6 km from Icchey Gaon. In the second half of the 17th century, Achyok ruled a Lepcha principality from here and resisted the Bhutanese, allying with Tibet. He was eventually captured and executed. The fort is usually dated to 1690; Lepcha lore says spirits carried its round stones up from the Reshi river.
The walk follows village paths and forest trails, with some steep sections. Allow 2–2.5 hours each way, and take a local guide, about ₹600–1,000, because paths branch and the fort is easy to miss in the trees. On the way you pass farms, cardamom groves and patches of old forest with good birds.
At the fort you will find low walls and scattered dressed stones, and views towards Pedong and Sikkim. Do not climb on the walls. Carry water and lunch. On 20 December, Lepchas gather here for Achyok's birth anniversary; if you come that day, be respectful and keep to the edges.
Cost: Guide ₹600–1,000
