Kafer, about 1 km from the centre of Lolegaon, is the older part of the village and its easiest viewpoint. In the late afternoon of a clear autumn day, the Kanchenjunga range turns gold above the valley. You do not need to get up at dawn for it, which makes it popular with families and older travellers.

The walk there and back is the real reward. Ask your host or a local guide to take you through the lanes rather than along the road. You pass houses with kitchen gardens of squash and chillies, cardamom growing in the shade, stands of bamboo, and small shrines. Lepcha and Nepali families live side by side; ask about the Lepcha language and Namsoong, the Lepcha New Year in December or January.

Be a good guest: greet people, ask before photographing anyone or entering a yard, and do not hand out sweets to children. A local guide costs about ₹500–800 for two or three hours and is the easiest way to be welcomed.
