Down the old forest path to Lava
After the dawn at Tiffin Dara, walk down the old path from Rishyap to Lava, about 4 km and 400 m of descent through oak, rhododendron and bamboo, the way villagers travelled before the road.

Before the road, Rishyap was reached only by this path, and villagers still use it to walk to Lava's bazaar. Going down is easier on the lungs than coming up: about 4 km, with roughly 400 m of descent, in 1.5–2 hours at a relaxed pace.
The path drops through old forest: oak and magnolia, rhododendron that flowers red and pink in March and April, and patches of bamboo. Mixed bird flocks move through the canopy in the mornings; stop often and listen. Near Lava the forest opens into fields and the monastery comes into view on its ridge.
The path is steep and slippery in places, especially after rain or frost, so walking poles help. Ask your homestay to send your bag down to Lava by car, and take a local guide if there is mist, as side paths can confuse. From May to September, leeches are common and the path is muddy; take the road instead.
