Hoping for snow on the Rishyap ridge

In some winters, Rishyap gets snow: a white ridge, frosted rhododendrons and Kanchenjunga behind. It is never guaranteed, but a winter night here gives you the best chance in the Kalimpong hills.

Most of West Bengal never sees snow. Rishyap, at 2,591 m, is one of the few places in the state where it can fall, usually as a light snowfall between late December and February, a little more often than at Lava below. When it comes, the ridge, the prayer flags and the rhododendron leaves turn white, and on the clear mornings after, Kanchenjunga rises behind it.

Snow here is unpredictable. Some winters bring two or three falls, others none. Watch the weather forecasts for western disturbances bringing rain to the plains and cold to the hills, and ask your homestay; families here know the signs. If snow is forecast, roads from Lava may be slippery or blocked, so travel with a local driver.

Pack serious winter clothes: thermals, a down jacket, cap, gloves and warm socks. Homestays use heaters and extra blankets, and the kitchen fire will be your favourite room. Even without snow, the winter skies are often the clearest of the year.
