Tiffin Dara is a ridge-top clearing about 1 km from Rishyap village. The local story is that it got its name because walkers stopped there to eat their tiffin; whatever the truth, it is now the village's sunrise point. At about 2,600 m, it looks north-west over the forested hills of Sikkim to the full Kanchenjunga range.

Leave your homestay 30 minutes before sunrise with a torch: about 5.30 am in October and March, after 6 am in December and January. The path is short but steep in places and can be icy in winter. Dress for the cold, with a down jacket, cap and gloves; dawn temperatures are often near or below freezing from December to February.

On a clear morning, the summit of Kanchenjunga catches the light first, followed by the peaks around it, while cloud lies in the valleys below like a sea. Stay 20–30 minutes after sunrise, when the light whitens and the detail of the range comes out. Mid-October to early December gives the best odds.

Questions people ask

Good to know

How far is Tiffin Dara from Rishyap?

About 1 km from the village, a 15–25 minute walk uphill on a short path. Leave 30 minutes before sunrise with a torch. The path can be slippery with frost in winter, so wear shoes with grip.

Is Tiffin Dara better than Deolo for Kanchenjunga?

It is higher, at about 2,600 m against Deolo's 1,704 m, and the view is wider and closer to the range. Deolo is easier to reach from Kalimpong. If you can spend a night at Rishyap, Tiffin Dara is the stronger dawn.

Can I visit Tiffin Dara as a day trip from Lava?

For sunrise you would need to leave Lava around 4.30–5 am by car. It is possible, but most people stay a night in Rishyap so they can walk to Tiffin Dara from the door. A day trip later in the morning often finds the peaks in cloud.
