Kanchenjunga dawn from Sillery Gaon
Step out of your homestay before sunrise and watch Kanchenjunga turn pink, gold and white to the north-west, with tea in hand and prayer flags in front. No drive, no crowd.

Like most villages on the Kalimpong ridges, Sillery Gaon was not built for the view, but it got one anyway. From the ridge the Kanchenjunga range lies to the north-west, beyond the hills of Sikkim. On clear mornings, the summit catches the sun a few minutes before the rest of the range, and the snow turns pink, then gold, then white.
Ask your hosts to knock 30 minutes before sunrise, about 5.30 am in October and March and after 6 am in December and January. Some homestays have a viewing deck or a garden; otherwise walk a few minutes along the ridge to an open spot. Dress warmly, because dawn in winter is close to freezing.
Mid-October to early December gives the best odds, with February and March next. Two nights give you two chances, which matters: even in good months, one dawn in three may be cloudy. Photographers should bring a zoom lens to bring the range closer.
