Winter night sky over the Teesta
On a dry, moonless winter night, go up to Ahaldara with your homestay driver and look at the stars over the Teesta valley. Far from big towns, the sky above is darker than in Darjeeling or Siliguri.
Ahaldara's open top and distance from big towns make it a good spot for the night sky in winter, when the air is dry and clear. To the south the glow of Siliguri lights the horizon, but overhead and to the north the sky is dark.
Go on a night near the new moon, between November and February. Arrange the trip with your homestay driver, who should wait for you, and go as a group. Take warm clothes, a torch with a red setting and a mat to lie on.
Respect the place: no fires, no loud music, and take everything back down with you. If the sky clouds over, come back for sunrise instead.
Cost: Car ₹800–1,200 from Latpanchar
Questions people ask
Good to know
Is it safe to go to Ahaldara at night?
Go only with your homestay driver or a local, as a group, and with the car waiting. The top is open and quiet, the path is uneven, and it is very cold in winter. Tell your host when you expect to be back.
When is the best time for stars at Ahaldara?
Dry winter nights from November to February, close to the new moon, give the darkest skies. The monsoon and pre-monsoon months are usually too cloudy or hazy. Check the moon phase before you plan.
Can I camp at Ahaldara?
We do not suggest it. The top is close to a wildlife sanctuary, there are no facilities, and rules on camping are not clear. Ask the forest department or local authorities before planning any overnight stay on the hill.
