Sunrise from Ahaldara
Drive up from Latpanchar in the dark, walk to the open top and watch first light reach the Kanchenjunga massif to the north and the Teesta valley below. The best free sight in this land on a clear winter morning.
Leave your homestay about 45 minutes before sunrise. The car stops below the top; walk up the path by torchlight, and find a spot facing north and east.
As the sky lightens, the ridges of Kalimpong appear across the Teesta, and the valley floor is often full of mist. If the air is clear, the snow peaks to the north turn pink before anything else. Then the sun clears the hills to the east, and the river below catches the light.
Stay an hour. The light changes fast, and the valley mist moves. By 8 or 9 am cloud usually rises, and the show is over until the next day.

Questions people ask
Good to know
What time should I reach Ahaldara for sunrise?
Aim to be on the top 20–30 minutes before sunrise: around 4.45 am in May and June, and around 5.45–6 am in December and January. Leave Latpanchar about 45 minutes before that, allowing for the drive and the short walk.
Is Kanchenjunga visible from Ahaldara?
On clear mornings from October to March, usually yes, to the north beyond the nearer ridges. Haze from April to May and cloud from June to September often hide it. Plan two mornings in Latpanchar or Sittong if the view matters to you.
Is the walk to the top of Ahaldara difficult?
No. It is a short walk of a few hundred metres on a path from where cars stop. Most people manage it in 10–15 minutes. It is uneven in places, so carry a torch before dawn and wear proper shoes.
