Chopta's frozen river on a winter morning
In deep winter the river through Chopta freezes into sheets and pools of ice between snowy meadows. Come after Gurudongmar or on a clear spare day from Lachen, stand on the bank, not the ice, and watch the light move across the valley.

Winter at about 4,000 m is long. By late December, the river through Chopta slows and freezes, first at the edges and then across whole stretches, with frozen pools on the valley floor and snow on the slopes. The effect on a clear morning is of a white and blue valley with the hills standing sharp above it.
Reaching it depends on the road. Snow can close the route beyond Lachen for days, and tours to Gurudongmar and Chopta are suspended when it does. If the road is open, the detour adds an hour or so to your day. Wear everything warm you have; morning temperatures are often far below freezing.
Stay on the bank. It is impossible to tell from above where ice is thin, and falling through into this water is life-threatening. Keep children close. Sunglasses are essential against snow glare. Do not walk out of sight of the vehicle, and leave nothing behind in the snow.
Cost: Add-on, if charged · ₹1,000–2,500 per vehicle
