A gentle high day: Thangu and Chopta

On a spare day in Lachen, drive up to Thangu and Chopta at an easy pace, walk gently on the valley floor at about 4,000 m and return to Lachen to sleep. It helps you acclimatise before Gurudongmar, or replaces it for those who should not go higher.

This is the classic climb-high, sleep-low day. You leave Lachen after breakfast, not at 3 am, and drive the 30-odd km to Thangu in daylight, seeing the forest and river you missed in the dark. After tea at Thangu, continue to Chopta and spend an hour or so walking very slowly on the flat valley floor.

At about 4,000 m you will feel the altitude. That is the point: your body begins to adapt, and you sleep that night back in Lachen, about 1,250 m lower. The next morning's Gurudongmar run is then less of a shock. If anyone feels badly unwell at Chopta, that is a clear sign to skip the lake.

You need a reserved vehicle and a permit that covers Thangu and Chopta for that date; agree this with your Gangtok operator when booking. The cost is roughly ₹3,000–5,000 per vehicle for the day, but rates vary. Carry water, snacks and a packed lunch. Be back in Lachen by mid-afternoon.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Does visiting Chopta help with acclimatisation?

Yes. Spending a few hours at about 4,000 m and then sleeping back in Lachen at about 2,750 m follows the climb-high, sleep-low principle. It helps the body adjust before Gurudongmar the next day. It is not a guarantee against altitude sickness.

Can I visit Chopta instead of Gurudongmar?

Often yes, if your permit covers it and your agent agrees. Chopta is about 1,200 m lower than Gurudongmar, which makes it a better choice for people with health concerns. Plan this when you book so the vehicle and permit are arranged correctly.

How much does a Chopta day trip from Lachen cost?

With a reserved vehicle, expect roughly ₹3,000–5,000 per vehicle for the day, depending on the agent, season and whether it is added to an existing package. Food is extra. Confirm the price and the permit before you leave Gangtok.
