Summer flowers in Chopta's meadows
After the snow goes, Chopta's meadows bloom with alpine flowers through the monsoon months. It is a short, intense season and comes with real road risk. If the road is open, walk the meadow edges in the morning before clouds and rain arrive.

High meadows like Chopta flower in a rush. From June to August, primulas, poppies and many small alpine plants appear across the grass and along the stream banks, while yaks graze nearby. It is a very different place from the frozen valley of winter, and much greener than the October valley most tours see.
The difficulty is reaching it. These are monsoon months, and the North Sikkim road from Gangtok to Lachen is often blocked by landslides. Tours are cancelled at short notice and travellers have been stranded. Only plan a summer trip with spare days, flexible bookings and a clear understanding with your agent about refunds.
If you get here, walk slowly along the edges of the meadows rather than across them, and keep to existing paths. Do not pick flowers. Mornings are usually clearer; afternoon rain is common. Waterproof shoes and a rain jacket are more useful than a heavy down jacket at this time of year.

Questions people ask
Good to know
When do flowers bloom in Chopta Valley?
Mainly from June to August, after the snow melts. The display varies from year to year. These are monsoon months, so access depends on the North Sikkim road being open. Check current status before you travel and plan spare days.
Is Chopta Valley worth visiting in summer?
For flower lovers and photographers, yes, if the road is open. The meadows are at their greenest and most colourful. But the monsoon brings frequent landslides and cancellations. If you have only a few fixed days, October or November is a safer choice.
What should I wear to Chopta in summer?
Layers: a warm fleece, a rain jacket, waterproof shoes and a cap. Days can be mild in the sun but turn cold quickly with cloud or rain, and nights are near freezing. Sunscreen is still needed at 4,000 m.
