Climb from Dhotrey to Tonglu through the forest
The classic short route onto the Singalila Ridge: about 6 km and 500 m of climbing from Dhotrey through oak, rhododendron and bamboo to the open summit of Tonglu, with Kanchenjunga waiting at the top on clear days.

Leave Dhotrey after breakfast with your licensed guide and park papers. The trail climbs from the top of the village into the forest almost at once. Lower down there are tall oaks and chestnuts, ferns and mossy boulders; higher up, rhododendrons, then dense ringal bamboo close to the ridge.
The path is steady and steep in places, with switchbacks and roots. Take regular breaks. In April the rhododendrons flower along the way; in autumn the forest is cool and quiet, with mushrooms and berries. Listen for laughingthrushes and look out for pheasants on the path.
After 3–4 hours you leave the trees and walk out onto Tonglu's grassy top at about 3,070 m. If the weather is clear, Kanchenjunga stands in the north and Darjeeling's ridge in the east. From here, continue to Tumling for the night or along the ridge toward Sandakphu.
Cost: Guide ₹1,500–2,000 a day per group · park entry
