Dawn birding on Dhotrey's forest edge
Walk the lanes and forest edge of Dhotrey at first light for birds of the temperate forest: laughingthrushes, minivets, tits, warblers and the occasional pheasant. The village is a good base for unhurried birding.

Dhotrey's mix of fields, gardens and forest edge is ideal for birds. Step out at dawn and walk slowly along the village lanes. Look for flocks of tits and warblers moving through the trees, minivets in the treetops and sunbirds at flowering shrubs.
Laughingthrushes forage noisily in the undergrowth, often in groups. Along the lower forest trail toward Tonglu, kalij pheasants are sometimes seen at the edge in the early morning, and in spring the satyr tragopan calls from higher up.
Inside the national park you need your licensed guide; in the village lanes you can wander freely. Two hours before breakfast is ideal. Bring binoculars and dull-coloured clothing.
Cost: Free in the village · guide fee inside the park
