Ride the dawn jeep from Rimbik to Darjeeling
Join farmers, students and traders on the early shared jeep to Darjeeling, winding 56 km along hill roads past villages, tea and forest. It is crowded and bumpy, cheap and very much part of the trip.
Shared jeeps, usually Mahindra or Tata utility vehicles, leave Rimbik's stand from before dawn, departing as they fill. Book a seat the evening before if you can; front seats sell first. Bags go on the roof under a tarpaulin.
The road climbs and winds along the hills, passing villages, small bazaars and forest, with views back to the ridge you walked. Jeeps stop for tea and to pick up and drop passengers. Expect about 4–5 hours to Darjeeling, depending on the route and the road.
From Darjeeling, change for NJP or Siliguri the same day if you have a train or flight; allow a buffer, as hill roads can be slow. Roads can be affected by landslides after heavy rain; check current status before you travel.
Cost: ₹200–300 a seat
