Sunset over Nepal from Tonglu
Watch the sun set over the ridges of Ilam from Tonglu's open summit while Kanchenjunga turns pink to the north and the lights of Darjeeling come on to the east. One of the most complete sunsets on the trek.

Tonglu stands high and free of trees, so you see the sunset and its effect at the same time. Westward, the forested ridges of Nepal step away in fading blues. Northward, the Kanchenjunga range catches the last light long after the valleys are dark. Eastward, the Darjeeling ridge picks up a gold edge, then begins to twinkle.
In October and November the air is clear and the colours sharp; in December it is cold enough that you will want a flask. Find a sheltered spot near the hut or a rock out of the wind. Photographers should frame the peaks in the north rather than the sun itself; the alpenglow on Kanchenjunga is the real show.
If you are staying at Tumling, leave Tonglu as soon as the colour fades and walk back with a torch; it takes 20–40 minutes and the path is easy but dark. Your guide will set the time.
