Kanchenjunga dawn from Upper Pelling

Stand on the Upper Pelling helipad ground or your hotel roof before sunrise and watch Kanchenjunga, 8,586 m, catch the first light. It costs nothing, needs no guide and is the reason most people come to Pelling. October to December gives the clearest mornings.

Kanchenjunga is the third-highest mountain in the world, at 8,586 m, and its name is usually explained as 'five treasures of the great snow'. For the Lepcha and Bhutia people of Sikkim it is more than a peak: it is a guardian deity, honoured each year at Pang Lhabsol, and climbers have traditionally stopped short of the very top out of respect. From Pelling you see it as a long white wall with neighbouring peaks such as Kabru and Pandim on either side.

Be outside by about 5 am in October and November and a little later in December and January. The summit catches the sun first, a pink point that spreads down the face and turns gold within 20–30 minutes, while the valleys below are still dark. The open helipad ground in Upper Pelling is the favourite spot, but any north-facing roof or road bend works. Bring a warm jacket, a cap and a flask of tea; mornings drop to near freezing in December.

Clouds usually build from mid-morning, so the mountain may be gone by 9 am. From mid-May to September you may wait several days for a clear dawn, which is why we rate the monsoon months low for Pelling. Photographers should bring a medium telephoto lens; the summit is far away, and phones tend to shrink it. Above all, do not spend the whole show behind a screen. Watch the light move across the snow for a few minutes first.

Questions people ask

Good to know

When is Kanchenjunga visible from Pelling?

The clearest months are October to December, when most mornings are clear from dawn until about 9 or 10 am. January to April also give many good mornings, though spring brings more haze. From mid-May to September the monsoon hides the range for days at a time. In any season, early morning is your best chance.

Where is the best sunrise point in Pelling?

The open helipad ground in Upper Pelling is the favourite free spot, with an uninterrupted view north. Many hotels in Upper Pelling also have roof terraces facing the range. You do not need to pay for a special viewpoint. If you stay in Lower Pelling, a short walk uphill before dawn will bring you to open ground.

How cold is Pelling at sunrise in winter?

In December and January early mornings in Pelling are often between 0 and 5 °C, with wind on open ground making it feel colder. Wear a down or fleece jacket, a cap, gloves and warm socks. By late morning it can reach 12–15 °C in the sun, so layers work better than one heavy coat.
