Gorumara forest weekend on a shoestring

Gorumara is the nearest rhino park to Siliguri, and it suits a weekend: two hours by road, short safaris, cheap homestays. This plan keeps costs down by using buses or the Dooars line train instead of a private car, and by sharing safari jeeps with other travellers. You still get two watchtower slots at different times of day, which is the real secret of good sightings here.

Base yourself in a family homestay in Lataguri, a few minutes from the forest department counter. Eat home-cooked fish thalis, walk to the forest edge with your host at dawn, and spend a free afternoon on the Murti riverbed. If you start on a Friday night train into NJP, you can be back on Sunday evening.

  • Rhinos and gaur at the Jatraprasad salt lick

Day by day

NJP railway station or Bagdogra airport to NJP railway station or Bagdogra airport · Mixed

Day01

NJP to Lataguri by bus or train

Lataguri≈ 80 km · 2.5–3.5 h by bus or trainDinner

Take an early Dooars line train from NJP or Siliguri Junction to New Mal Junction, or a bus from Siliguri towards Malbazar and Maynaguri. From Malbazar, a local auto or bus covers the last 15 km to Lataguri. Check in to your homestay by lunch. In the afternoon, report at the forest department counter for your pre-booked watchtower slot, ideally Jatraprasad or the Rhino Observation Point, where rhinos and gaur come to the salt lick as the light fades. Back for tea and a home-cooked dinner.

Spend today: ₹150 train or bus + ₹100 auto + ₹550 safari seat

Day02

Dawn safari and a Murti afternoon

LataguriBreakfast, dinner

Take the first watchtower slot of the morning, Medla with its bullock-cart ride or Chukchuki for birds, and be back for breakfast. Rest through the heat. In the afternoon, share an auto or local car with other guests to the Murti river, about 15 km away, and walk onto the stony riverbed for sunset, leaving before dark. Ask your homestay to cook boroli or another river fish for dinner if it is in season, and sit outside for the night sounds of the forest edge.

Spend today: ₹550 safari seat + ₹200 auto share + ₹150 lunch

Day03

Tea garden walk and back to NJP

≈ 80 km · 2.5–3.5 h by bus or trainBreakfast

Walk out at 7 am with your host along the estate roads of a nearby tea garden, watching pluckers head to the sections in season. After breakfast, take a bus or auto to Malbazar and a train or bus back to Siliguri and NJP. Allow plenty of time for traffic on the Sevoke road if you have an evening train; afternoon trains are safer. Buy local tea in Malbazar market if you want to take some home.

Spend today: ₹150 bus or train + ₹100 auto + ₹150 lunch

Three ways to spend less

  • Book watchtower slots online and post in traveller groups to fill a six-seat jeep, which cuts your share to about ₹450–600.
  • Use the Dooars line train to New Mal Junction instead of a reserved car; it costs a fraction of the ₹3,000-plus taxi fare.
  • Choose a family homestay over a highway resort; meals are included and the food is better.

Good to know

  • Gorumara closes from about 16 June to 15 September; check current status before you travel.
  • Weekend slots sell out; book as soon as your dates are fixed.
  • Carry the ID you used to book; it is checked at the counter.

Questions people ask

Questions about this trip

Can I do Gorumara in two nights on a budget?

Yes. With buses or the Dooars line train, a family homestay at around ₹1,400 per person with meals and two shared safari seats, a two-night trip from NJP costs about ₹5,000 per person. The main cost risk is a private safari jeep; sharing keeps it low.

How do I share a safari jeep in Gorumara?

Book seats if the online system allows individual bookings, or book a jeep and fill it through your homestay, other guests or traveller groups. Counter staff and drivers sometimes match solo travellers too. Six people share one jeep and its fees.

Which train goes from NJP to Malbazar?

Several local and express trains on the Dooars line between NJP or Siliguri Junction and Alipurduar stop at New Mal Junction in Malbazar. Timings change, so check the current railway timetable or app. The journey takes about two to three hours.

Is a homestay in Lataguri safe for solo women?

Generally yes. Choose a family-run homestay with good recent reviews, share your plans with your hosts and avoid walking on the highway after dark. Hosts in Lataguri are used to solo travellers and usually help arrange safari jeeps and autos.

What if the watchtower slots are sold out?

Go to the Lataguri counter early on the day for cancellations and leftover seats, or book Chapramari, which uses the same system. Weekdays are far easier than weekends. Book online early to avoid relying on luck.

Do we see rhinos on a weekend trip?

Often, but not always. Gorumara has about 60 rhinos, and the evening slot at Jatraprasad or the Rhino Observation Point gives the best chance. Gaur and peafowl are very likely. Two slots at different times of day improve your odds.

Can we do this trip in the monsoon?

Not for safaris: Gorumara closes from about 16 June to 15 September. Homestays stay open and tea gardens are green, but riverbeds are dangerous. Plan this weekend for October to May, and best from November to March.

What should I pack for a Gorumara weekend?

ID, a warm layer for dawn in winter, a light rain jacket, binoculars, a torch, muted clothes, insect repellent and a small daypack. Cash for autos and tips is useful, since the Lataguri ATM can run dry.

Can we extend this to Jaldapara?

Yes. Add two nights in Madarihat, about two hours east of Lataguri by bus or train via Malbazar or by car. That turns this into a four-night rhino trip; see our Gorumara and Jaldapara journey for a full plan.
