Mirik is the gentlest hill town in the Darjeeling hills, two hours from Siliguri and built around a lake. This weekend uses a reserved car for the drives, so children and older family members are comfortable, and a single base for two nights so nobody has to pack twice.

We time the sights to avoid the crowds: the lake at dawn, the monastery at prayer time, the tea viewpoints in morning light on the way up. Afternoons are free for boating, a walk on the estate roads or simply a long tea by the water.

Questions people ask

Questions about this trip

Is the price per person?

Yes. ₹8,500 is per person on twin sharing for Indian nationals, from NJP or Bagdogra and back, as an indicative 2025–26 figure. Solo travellers pay more for rooms and cars; groups of four sharing a car pay less. We round to the nearest ₹500.

Can we start from Bagdogra airport instead of NJP?

Yes. Bagdogra is about 30 minutes from Siliguri and a little further from NJP. Shared autos and taxis link the airport to the Siliguri jeep stands. With a reserved car, the fare from Bagdogra is about the same as from NJP.

Can we change the number of nights?

Yes. Add a night where you want more time, usually in the village stops, or drop one on a tight schedule. Keep at least two nights in any place where you want a clear dawn view, since weather can spoil one morning.

Is Mirik good for a family weekend?

Yes. The drives are short, the lake walk is level, boats and ponies keep children busy and food is easy. We keep to one hotel for both nights. Bring warm layers for the evenings and keep children close on the lakeside road.

Where do you suggest staying in Mirik?

The GTA's Swiss Cottages above the lake suit families who want space and quiet. Krishnanagar, across the lake, has many budget and mid-range hotels from about ₹1,200 a double. Choose a lake-view room if your budget allows.

Can we add Darjeeling to this trip?

Yes. Instead of returning to NJP on day 3, drive about 2 hours over the ridge via Sukhia Pokhari to Darjeeling, and spend two nights there. A car from Mirik to Darjeeling costs about ₹2,500–3,200.

What is the best season for this weekend?

October to December for clear weather and oranges from November; March to May for spring and tea. Avoid the heavy rain of July and August. Winter nights are cold, so ask for a heater.

Do we need a guide in Mirik?

No. Mirik is small and easy to explore on your own. Drivers are happy to suggest stops on the way up. A local guide is useful only if you want to walk deeper into the tea estates.

Can older travellers manage this trip?

Yes. Most of it is by car, and the lake walk is level. The climb to Bokar Monastery is steep on foot, but a car can go up. Take it slowly on the stairs at Rameetay Dara.
