South Sikkim is where the state built its modern landmarks: a 130-foot Buddha at Ravangla, consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 2013, a 118-foot Guru Rinpoche on Samdruptse hill above Namchi, completed in 2004, and the Char Dham complex at Solophok. Between them sit older places, Ralang's monasteries, Kewzing's Bon gompa, Temi's tea slopes, and Tendong Hill, which the Lepchas say saved their ancestors from a flood.

The roads here are shorter and gentler than in the west, and shared jeeps between Siliguri, Namchi and Ravangla are frequent. That makes this the easiest budget trip in our land, and a good one for families who do not want long drives.

Questions people ask

Questions about this trip

Is Ravangla or Namchi better for a base?

Ravangla is higher, cooler and closer to Buddha Park, Ralang and the Maenam walk; Namchi is a district town with more shops, restaurants and jeeps, close to Samdruptse and Char Dham. On a 4-night trip we split two and two, so neither sightseeing day needs a long drive.

How much does this trip cost?

About ₹10,000 per person, twin sharing, from NJP back to NJP, indicative for 2025–26. That covers jeep seats, four nights in budget hotels or a homestay, meals, entries and shared local taxis. A reserved car throughout would add roughly ₹6,000–8,000 per person for two.

Is this trip good for families with children?

Yes. The drives are short by Sikkim standards, the sights are reached by road, and both towns have simple restaurants. Buddha Park and Char Dham have wide paths and space to walk. Pack warm layers, as Ravangla evenings are cool even in spring.

Can I add Tendong Hill?

Yes, add a night and start early from Damthang, between Namchi and Ravangla. The walk climbs through forest to about 2,600 m in roughly 3 to 4 hours one way. In Lepcha tradition the hill rose to save their ancestors from a great flood. Avoid it in heavy rain.

What are the entry fees at Buddha Park and Char Dham?

Both charge small entry fees, roughly ₹50–100 for Indian adults, with separate rates for foreigners and sometimes for cameras. Samdruptse also charges a fee. Amounts change, so carry small notes and check current status before you travel.

When is the best time to visit Ravangla and Namchi?

October to December for clear skies and views, March to May for flowers and mild weather. January and February are cold but often clear. Late August or September brings Pang Lhabsol at Ravangla, but also monsoon rain and possible road delays.

Can I visit Temi Tea Garden without a car?

Yes. Some shared jeeps between Ravangla, Namchi and Singtam pass through Temi; ask at the stand. Otherwise share a local taxi for the 18 km from Ravangla. The garden can be walked freely along roads and paths; factory visits depend on the season.

Do I need to book hotels in advance?

In October, Durga Puja and Diwali holidays and in April and May, book a few days ahead, as both towns fill with visitors from Bengal and Bihar. At other times you can usually find a room on arrival, though booking the first night is always wise.

Can I continue to Pelling instead of returning to NJP?

Yes. From Ravangla or Namchi take a jeep to Legship or Jorethang and change for Gyalshing and Pelling, about 3 to 4 hours in all. This turns the trip into a South and West Sikkim loop; add at least two nights in Pelling.
