How hard is the walk from Dhotrey to Tonglu?
Moderate. It is about 6 km with roughly 570 m of climbing on a clear forest path, and most walkers take 3–4 hours with rests. There is no technical ground, but the trail is steady uphill and can be muddy after rain. Anyone who walks regularly will manage it; go slowly and drink water, as Tonglu is above 3,000 m.
How much does this 2-night trip cost?
About ₹7,000 per person for two people sharing a guide, from NJP back to NJP, indicative for 2025–26. That covers shared jeep seats, a Dhotrey homestay and a Tonglu hut bed with dinner and breakfast, the guide, park entry and simple lunches. A solo walker paying the whole guide fee should budget about ₹9,500–10,000.
Do I need a guide for such a short walk?
Yes. The rule as we understand it is that every group entering Singalila National Park needs a licensed local guide, and the Dhotrey–Tonglu trail is inside the park. Hire one at Maneybhanjan for about ₹1,500–2,000 a day per group, where you also pay entry. Rules change, so check current status before you travel.
Can I see Kanchenjunga from Tonglu?
On a clear day, yes, and the view is wide: the whole Kanchenjunga range to the north and, on the clearest mornings, Everest and Makalu far to the west. October to early December gives the best odds. Cloud often builds by late morning, so sunset and the next dawn are your two real chances.
What if the Tonglu trekkers' hut is closed or full?
Walk on to Tumling, 20–40 minutes away down the ridge, where several family lodges offer dorm beds at about ₹400–700 and twin rooms at ₹1,500–2,800. Shikhar Lodge is the best known. You can still walk back up to Tonglu for sunset or dawn. Ask your guide to phone ahead from Dhotrey.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes, though the guide fee then falls on one person. Dhotrey homestays and the Tonglu hut both take single guests, and the trail is well used. Many solo travellers meet others in Darjeeling hostels or at the Maneybhanjan guide office and share a guide. Women walking alone generally report feeling safe on the ridge; the usual care applies.
When is the best time for Dhotrey and Tonglu?
October to December for clear mountain views, and March to April for rhododendron flowers on the forest trail. January and February are cold, sometimes with snow on Tonglu, but often clear. May is warm and hazy. The park usually closes from mid-June to mid-September, so the trail is off limits then.
What should I pack for two nights?
A warm down or fleece jacket, a cap, gloves, thermal layers, a rain shell, sturdy shoes with grip, a head torch, a filter bottle, sunscreen and a small first-aid kit. Carry a passport or voter ID. A light sleeping bag liner is useful in the hut. Keep your pack under 7 kg; there is no porter on this trip.
Can I combine this with the full Sandakphu trek?
Yes. From Tonglu the main trail continues past Tumling to Gairibas, Kalipokhri and Sandakphu, two more days of walking. Instead of walking down on day three, carry on north. Agree the longer trip with your guide at the start, as the daily fee and park entry may be counted differently.
