GTA Trekkers' Hut, Tonglu
A government trekkers' hut on the open summit of Tonglu at about 3,070 m, run under the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration. Basic dorm beds, blankets and simple meals from a caretaker, with a 360-degree view from Kanchenjunga to Darjeeling outside the door.

The trekkers' huts of the Singalila Ridge were built to give walkers cheap, basic shelter at the main stops, and Tonglu's sits right on the summit. Inside you will find dormitory rooms with simple beds and blankets, a small dining area and very basic toilets. A caretaker cooks plain meals, usually dal-bhat and noodles, when trekkers are expected.
It is cold, plain and cheap, and its position is excellent: sunrise over Kanchenjunga, sunset over Nepal and Darjeeling's lights at night. Condition varies from year to year, and booking channels have changed over time, so confirm through GTA tourism offices in Darjeeling or the guide office at Maneybhanjan before relying on it. If it is closed or full, the lodges at Tumling are 20–40 minutes away.
Why we suggest it
- The only bed on Tonglu's summit, with a full 360-degree view
- Among the cheapest beds on the trek
- Short walk to Tumling's lodges if you want more comfort
