GTA Trekkers' Hut, Gairibas

A basic government trekkers' hut in the forest clearing of Gairibas at about 2,621 m, inside Singalila National Park. Plain dorm beds and simple meals, but the best-placed bed on the trek for early-morning red panda and bird walks.

Gairibas is a quiet clearing at the lowest point of the ridge between Tumling and Kalipokhri, surrounded by oak, rhododendron and bamboo. The trekkers' hut here offers dorm-style rooms with beds and blankets, very basic toilets and meals cooked by a caretaker when trekkers are expected. There is an SSB camp nearby and a few tea shops.

Most trekkers pass through Gairibas at lunchtime, so a night here puts you in the forest when it is empty. That is the reason to stay: dawn walks for red pandas and pheasants, and a loud spring dawn chorus. Condition and opening vary; confirm in Darjeeling or at Maneybhanjan before relying on it, and carry a warm sleeping bag.

Why we suggest it

  • In the middle of the park's best red panda forest
  • Quiet nights away from the busier lodges
  • Very low cost

Questions people ask

Good to know

Is the Gairibas trekkers' hut open all season?

It is meant to operate in the trekking seasons, but opening and condition vary. Confirm with GTA tourism in Darjeeling or the Maneybhanjan guide office before planning a night there. Check current status before you travel.

Why stay at Gairibas instead of Kalipokhri?

For wildlife. Gairibas is surrounded by forest that red pandas, pheasants and many birds use, and a night there lets you walk at dawn before trekkers arrive. Kalipokhri has more comfortable lodges but less forest.

Is there food at the Gairibas hut?

The caretaker usually cooks simple meals, and tea shops nearby sell noodles and tea. Carry snacks as backup, especially outside peak season.
