Sandakphu's trekkers' hut stands among the private lodges on the summit and offers the cheapest beds at the top. Rooms are dormitories or simple shared rooms with beds and heavy blankets; toilets are basic and cold, and meals, when available, are plain dal-bhat and noodles. It has hosted budget trekkers for decades.

The point is the location. You step out at 5 am and walk a few metres to the viewpoint where the Kanchenjunga massif and the Everest group appear. Booking has historically gone through the hill council's tourism department, now under the GTA, but channels change; ask in Darjeeling or at Maneybhanjan. In peak season it fills with groups, so do not arrive without confirmation.

Why we suggest it

  • The cheapest bed on West Bengal's highest point

Questions people ask

Good to know

How do I book the Sandakphu trekkers' hut?

Through GTA tourism in Darjeeling or with help from the Maneybhanjan guide office; channels have changed over the years. Book well ahead for October, the Puja holidays and Christmas. Check current status before you travel.

How cold is the Sandakphu hut at night?

Very cold in winter: nights outside drop to about −8 to −10 °C in December and January, and rooms are unheated. Bring a sleeping bag rated well below freezing, or ask for extra blankets.

Is the trekkers' hut cheaper than Sandakphu lodges?

Yes, usually. Dorm beds in the hut cost less than private lodge rooms, which run about ₹2,000–3,500 for a twin. Lodges are more comfortable and have better dining rooms.
