Three nights in Darjeeling's orange village. Walk the orchards and the Riyang river, see the old village church, and take one early car to Ahaldara for sunrise over the Teesta and to Latpanchar for hornbills. From about ₹8,000 per person with homestay meals.

Sittong is a farming village in the Riyang valley, and this trip treats it that way: one homestay, three nights, and days built around walking, eating and village life. In orange season, November to January, the whole valley is heavy with fruit.

To keep costs down, you travel by shared and local jeeps where they run, and share one day car with other guests for the dawn trip to Ahaldara and Latpanchar. Your homestay host can usually arrange it.

Questions people ask

Questions about this trip

Is the price per person?

Yes. ₹8,000 is per person on twin sharing for Indian nationals, from NJP or Bagdogra and back, as an indicative 2025–26 figure. Solo travellers pay more for rooms and cars; groups of four sharing a car pay less. We round to the nearest ₹500.

Can we start from Bagdogra airport instead of NJP?

Yes. Bagdogra is about 30 minutes from Siliguri and a little further from NJP. Shared autos and taxis link the airport to the Siliguri jeep stands. With a reserved car, the fare from Bagdogra is about the same as from NJP.

Can we change the number of nights?

Yes. Add a night where you want more time, usually in the village stops, or drop one on a tight schedule. Keep at least two nights in any place where you want a clear dawn view, since weather can spoil one morning.

When is the best time for Sittong?

November to January for oranges and clear mornings at Ahaldara; December is the peak. March and April are good for birds at Latpanchar. Avoid July and August, when roads and village paths are slippery.

Are there direct jeeps from Siliguri to Sittong?

A few, usually leaving Sittong early in the morning and Siliguri in the afternoon. Timings change, so ask your homestay. The reliable alternative is a shared jeep to Kurseong and a local jeep or car from there.

Can I see Kanchenjunga on this trip?

Possibly, from Ahaldara at sunrise on a clear morning, most likely between October and March. Weather decides. If the first morning is cloudy, ask your host to try again the next day.

What will I eat in Sittong?

Home-cooked Nepali hill food: rice, dal, greens, squash, potatoes, pickles and, on request, chicken or pork. In season you will eat many oranges. Breakfast is usually roti or puri with potato curry, or bread and eggs.

Is Sittong good for a first trip to the hills?

Yes, if you want village life over sightseeing. It is quiet, cheap and friendly. If you want shops, cafés and many sights, start with Kurseong or Mirik and add Sittong on a later trip.

Is there mobile network in Sittong?

Patchy. Jio and Airtel work in parts of the village, better on the upper road. Do not plan to work online. Tell family you may be out of reach and download offline maps.
