Beyond Pelling the road keeps going, down to the Dentam valley and up again to Uttarey at about 2,000 m, where the Singalila ridge marks the border with Nepal. For generations people walked over that ridge at Chewabhanjyang to trade and visit relatives; today Uttarey is a farming village with homestays, a small lake, waterfalls and forest trails.

This trip is for people who want to stop moving. You spend more nights in villages than in towns, eat what your hosts grow and walk rather than drive. On the way you cross Singshore Bridge, a suspension bridge about 100 m above a gorge, said to be the highest in Sikkim.

  • Homestay rates include dinner and breakfast, so the only daily extra is lunch and tea.
  • Visit in the monsoon shoulder months of late September or early March, when village rates are lowest and the hills still green.
  • Book the morning jeeps through your hosts; they know the drivers and the real seat price.

Good to know

  • Uttarey lies near the Nepal border; carry photo ID and follow any instructions at border posts.
  • Foreign nationals need a Sikkim Restricted Area Permit. Check current status before you travel.
  • Mobile signal in Uttarey and Dentam is patchy; carry cash, there are no reliable ATMs.
  • Roads beyond Pelling are narrow and can be blocked by landslides in the monsoon; check current status before you travel.

Questions people ask

Questions about this trip

Where is Uttarey?

Uttarey is a village at about 2,000 m in Gyalshing district, near the Nepal border, roughly 30 km beyond Pelling via Dentam. It sits below the Singalila ridge and was on the old foot route over Chewabhanjyang into Nepal. Today it is known for homestays, forest walks and quiet.

Can I walk from Uttarey into Nepal?

Not as a tourist on this trip. Chewabhanjyang is a border pass with a security post, and crossing needs permissions that are not given for casual walking. Day walks towards the ridge are possible with a local guide. Check current status before you travel, as border rules change.

How do I reach Uttarey by public transport?

Take a shared jeep from Siliguri to Jorethang, then a jeep towards Pelling or Gyalshing and onwards to Dentam and Uttarey, or a direct Jorethang to Uttarey jeep if one is running. Departures are few and mostly in the morning. Your homestay can advise on the current timings.

What is Singshore Bridge?

A road suspension bridge between Dentam and Uttarey, about 240 m long and roughly 100 m above the gorge below. It is said to be the highest suspension bridge in Sikkim. Vehicles cross it, and visitors walk across for the view down. It is free to visit.

How much does this trip cost?

About ₹12,500 per person, twin sharing, from NJP back to NJP, indicative for 2025–26. That includes jeep seats, a Pelling budget room, four nights of village homestays with meals, food and a shared guide. Solo travellers pay a little more per night at most homestays.

Is Uttarey cold in winter?

Yes. At about 2,000 m, nights in December and January fall close to freezing and mornings can be frosty, though days are often sunny and clear. Homestays provide thick quilts; ask about a heater or a hot water bottle. Pack thermals, a down jacket and woollen socks.

Is there anything to do in Uttarey?

Uttarey is about walking and resting: forest trails towards the Singalila ridge, Mainebas waterfall, a small lake, farm paths and birdwatching. Singshore Bridge is nearby. If you need a full sightseeing list each day, base yourself in Pelling instead and visit on a day trip.

Is food at Uttarey homestays vegetarian?

Most homestays cook rice, dal, seasonal vegetables, saag and pickles, and many also cook chicken or eggs. Tell your hosts in advance if you are vegetarian, vegan or avoid particular foods; they are used to requests. Local squash, greens and cheese often appear on the table.

Can I add Barsey to this trip?

Barsey is on the same Singalila range but is reached from Hilley on the Soreng side, not from Uttarey by a regular road. You would go back via Jorethang and Sombaria. It is better as a separate trip or an extension of two nights.
