In briefFly to Bagdogra or take a train to New Jalpaiguri, then go by road: a shared jeep from Siliguri to Jorethang and on to Pelling, Namchi or Ravangla, or a reserved car all the way. Siliguri to Pelling is about 135 km and 5–6 hours. Indians need no permit; foreigners need a Sikkim Restricted Area Permit.

The short answer

There is no railway into Sikkim yet and no useful airport in the west, so everyone arrives by road from the plains at Siliguri. From Siliguri the road climbs along the Teesta to Melli, crosses into Sikkim, and follows the Rangeet to Jorethang. Jorethang is the junction: one road climbs to Namchi and Ravangla, another to Legship, Geyzing and Pelling.

For two people travelling light, shared jeeps are cheap and frequent in the morning. For families or anyone with limited days, a reserved car from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) or Bagdogra saves several hours of changing vehicles. Roads in this region close for landslides in the monsoon and the Teesta road has had long closures since the October 2023 flood, so check current status before you travel.

From NJP, Bagdogra and Siliguri

New Jalpaiguri is the main railhead, with overnight trains from Kolkata and direct trains from Delhi and Guwahati. Bagdogra airport, about 14 km west of Siliguri, has flights from the major Indian cities. Both are a short auto or taxi ride from the Sikkim jeep stands around the SNT bus terminus in Siliguri, where shared jeeps for Jorethang, Namchi, Ravangla and a few for Geyzing and Pelling start loading from about 6 am.

Direct jeeps to Pelling or Geyzing are few and mostly leave in the morning, so book a seat the day before at the counter if you can. If you miss them, take any jeep to Jorethang and change; Jorethang has jeeps onward to Pelling, Geyzing, Namchi, Ravangla and Legship through the day, thinning out after early afternoon.

If your train reaches NJP after mid-morning or your flight lands after noon, you will probably miss the direct Pelling jeeps. Options then are a reserved car straight to Pelling, which arrives after dark, a shared jeep to Jorethang or Namchi and a night there, or a night in Siliguri and an early start. For families, a reserved car of ₹5,000–6,500 split four ways is close to the cost of shared seats and saves a change of vehicle.

Jorethang and Geyzing, the two hubs

Jorethang, low on the Rangeet at only a few hundred metres, is warm, busy and the place every route in South and West Sikkim seems to pass through. The jeep stand is in the middle of town, with counters for each destination; cheap thali places and momo stalls line the road beside it. It is worth knowing that Jorethang also has a road up to Darjeeling, so it links the Sikkim and Darjeeling hills directly.

Geyzing, now officially Gyalshing, is the headquarters of Gyalshing district and the transport hub of the west. It sits about 10 km below Pelling, and local jeeps shuttle up for ₹40–60 a seat. Jeeps to Yuksom, Tashiding, Khecheopalri, Dentam, Uttarey and Rinchenpong usually start from here or pass through, mostly in the morning.

Jorethang and Geyzing both have ATMs, pharmacies and simple hotels, so either makes a reasonable overnight stop if a landslide or a late arrival breaks your journey. Neither is a sightseeing town, but both are good places to eat cheaply and to hear the latest road news from drivers.

Onward to Yuksom, Ravangla and the villages

Beyond the hubs, roads narrow and shared jeeps become fewer. Many village homestays will send a car to meet you at Geyzing, Jorethang or Pelling for an agreed price, which is worth asking about when you book. Yuksom is the end of the road for vehicles; beyond it the Goecha La trail is on foot. Timings below are for dry weather.

  • Pelling to Yuksom: about 35–40 km, 1.5–2 h, past Rimbi and Kanchenjunga Falls; a few shared jeeps at ₹150–250, or a reserved car often combined with Khecheopalri.
  • Pelling to Rinchenpong and Kaluk: about 40 km, 2 h, via Geyzing and Legship side roads; shared jeeps are few, so many people hire a car.
  • Pelling to Dentam and Uttarey: about 30 km, 1.5–2 h beyond Pelling, crossing the Singshore Bridge; morning jeeps from Geyzing.
  • Pelling to Hee Bermiok: on the Dentam side of Pelling; ask your homestay to arrange a pick-up.
  • Barsey: drive to Hilley via Jorethang and Soreng, or to Okhrey, then walk 4 km to Barsey.
  • Namchi to Temi Tea Garden: about 30 km; Ravangla to Temi about 18 km.

From Gangtok and Darjeeling

From Gangtok, the usual route to the west runs via Singtam and Ravangla, about 65 km and 3 hours to Ravangla, where shared jeeps cost ₹250–350. From Ravangla, roads continue to Legship and up to Geyzing and Pelling, or down to Namchi. A few shared jeeps run from Gangtok to Pelling and Namchi each morning; ask locally which Gangtok stand serves the west, as it has moved over the years. A reserved car from Gangtok to Pelling takes about 5–6 hours.

From Darjeeling, Pelling is about 75 km and 4 hours by road via Jorethang, much shorter than going back down to Siliguri. Shared jeeps run from Darjeeling to Jorethang in the morning, and from there you change for Pelling, Namchi or Ravangla. Many travellers link Darjeeling, Pelling and Gangtok as a loop this way.

From Kalimpong there is no direct road shortcut to Pelling; most travellers come down to the Teesta at Melli and continue to Jorethang. Foreign nationals arriving from Darjeeling or Kalimpong must cross a Sikkim checkpost with a valid Restricted Area Permit, so arrange it before setting out.

Permits for foreign nationals

Indian citizens need no permit for Pelling, Yuksom, Ravangla, Namchi or any of the villages in this guide; carry a photo ID. Foreign nationals need a Sikkim Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to enter the state. It can be applied for online as an e-RAP, or obtained through Sikkim Tourism offices and at entry checkposts such as Rangpo and Melli; Melli is the checkpost on the road to Jorethang. Keep several photocopies of the permit and your passport, as you will be asked for them at checkposts and hotels.

Treks inside Khangchendzonga National Park, including Dzongri and Goecha La, need park permits from Yuksom and a licensed guide, and foreigners must go in a group through a registered agency. Rules, validity and fees change; check current status before you travel.

Three easy loops to plan around

Most travellers combine West and South Sikkim with Darjeeling or Gangtok. These loops keep backtracking to a minimum.

  • West Sikkim circuit, 6–7 days: Siliguri, Pelling, Yuksom, Tashiding, Ravangla, Namchi, Siliguri, with Jorethang as the hinge at both ends.
  • Darjeeling to Gangtok via the west, 7–9 days: Darjeeling, Jorethang, Pelling, Yuksom, Ravangla, Gangtok, then down to Siliguri.
  • Villages and views, 5–6 days: Siliguri, Rinchenpong or Kaluk, Hee Bermiok or Dentam, Uttarey, Pelling, Siliguri.
  • Short South Sikkim break, 3–4 days: Siliguri, Namchi, Temi, Ravangla, Siliguri, which works well on a long weekend.

Practical tips for the road

  • Start early: most shared jeeps leave between 6 am and noon, and few run after 2 pm on rural routes.
  • Take motion sickness tablets if you need them; the roads above Jorethang and Legship are long hairpin climbs.
  • Luggage goes on the roof under a tarpaulin; keep valuables, water and a jacket inside with you.
  • In the monsoon, leave a buffer day before any flight or train out of Bagdogra or NJP.
  • Check road status with your hotel or the jeep counter the evening before; landslide news travels faster locally than online.

Questions people ask

Good to know

How do I reach Pelling from NJP or Bagdogra?

Take an auto or taxi to the Sikkim jeep stands near the SNT terminus in Siliguri, then a direct shared jeep to Pelling or Geyzing for about ₹450–600, or a jeep to Jorethang for ₹250–350 and another to Pelling for ₹150–220. A reserved small car from NJP costs about ₹5,000–6,500 and takes 5–6 hours. Check current status before you travel.

What is the nearest railway station to Pelling?

New Jalpaiguri (NJP), about 140 km and 5–6 hours by road, is the nearest major station, with trains from Kolkata, Delhi and Guwahati. Siliguri Junction is close by but has fewer trains. There is no railway in Sikkim yet, so the last stretch is always by shared jeep or car.

What is the nearest airport to Pelling?

Bagdogra (IXB), near Siliguri, is the practical airport, with flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru and other cities. Sikkim's own Pakyong airport near Gangtok has had limited and irregular flights, and it is farther from Pelling in road time, so check current status before you travel if you plan to use it.

Is there a direct shared jeep from Siliguri to Pelling?

Yes, a few, mostly in the morning from the jeep stands near the SNT terminus. They cost about ₹450–600 a seat and take 5–6 hours. Book a seat the day before if you can. If they are full, take a jeep to Jorethang and change there for Pelling or Geyzing. Fares are indicative; check current status before you travel.

How do I get from Gangtok to Pelling?

The usual road runs via Singtam, Ravangla and Legship to Geyzing and Pelling, taking about 5–6 hours. A few shared jeeps run each morning, or go to Ravangla for ₹250–350 and change. A reserved car is simpler for families. Monsoon landslides can delay this route, so check current status before you travel.

Can I go from Darjeeling to Pelling directly?

Yes. Pelling is about 75 km and roughly 4 hours from Darjeeling by road via Jorethang. Morning shared jeeps run from Darjeeling to Jorethang, where you change for Pelling. A reserved car does the trip in one go. Foreign nationals should make sure their Sikkim permit is in order before reaching the Sikkim checkpost.

Do Indians need a permit for Pelling and Yuksom?

No. Indian citizens do not need a permit for Pelling, Yuksom, Ravangla, Namchi or the West Sikkim villages; just carry a photo ID. A permit is needed for treks inside Khangchendzonga National Park such as Dzongri and Goecha La, issued at Yuksom with a licensed guide. Check current status before you travel.

How do foreigners get a Sikkim permit?

Foreign nationals need a Sikkim Restricted Area Permit. It can be applied for online as an e-RAP, or obtained through Sikkim Tourism offices and at entry checkposts such as Rangpo and Melli. You need your passport and Indian visa. It covers Pelling, Yuksom, Ravangla and Namchi. Validity and process change; check current status before you travel.

How long does it take to reach Yuksom from Siliguri?

Allow 7–8 hours for about 170 km. Few jeeps run directly, so most travellers go Siliguri to Jorethang or Pelling, then on to Yuksom via the falls road or via Legship and Tashiding. Pelling to Yuksom is about 35–40 km and 1.5–2 hours. Many people break the journey with a night in Pelling.
