Neora Valley National Park, declared in 1986, covers about 88 km² of forest from the foothills above Samsing to ridges over 3,000 m near Rachela. The lower park, near Samsing, is warm broadleaf forest; the upper park holds rhododendron, bamboo and red pandas. Most of the park is closed to casual walking, but the edge above Samsing can be explored with a guide.

The walk to Mouchuki climbs steadily through tea and then forest-edge scrub, with views opening over the plains and back to the Murti valley. Birds are the main wildlife: barbets, sunbirds, laughingthrushes, minivets and, with luck, hornbills. Leeches appear after rain, so wear long socks.

Go with a local guide, who will know which paths are open and where you may not enter the park without permission. Forest department rules on entry into Neora Valley change; check current status before you travel. Carry water and snacks, since there are no shops beyond the village.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Can we enter Neora Valley National Park from Samsing?

Entry into the park needs forest department permission and usually a guide, and many areas are closed to visitors. From Samsing, the common walks stay along the park's edge, such as towards Mouchuki. Ask the forest office or your guide and check current status before you travel.

How hard is the walk to Mouchuki?

Moderate: a steady climb of a few hundred metres on road and path, taking three to four hours return at an easy pace with stops. Shoes with grip are needed. Anyone used to walking an hour or two uphill will manage.

Are there red pandas near Samsing?

Red pandas live in Neora Valley's upper forests, well above Samsing, generally above 2,000 m. You will not see them on the lower walks. Lava and the upper Neora Valley, in the Kalimpong land, are the places to try, with a guide and patience.
